Most of the world were under global empires that needed to have some sort of census for taxation purposes. They weren't entirely accurate, however, so it's really just educated guesses from historians using the records on hand. And it's also come from people self-identifying as white as well. So yeah, you are right to an extent. But it's still an interesting sight to see
