What is this new thing where they have champions competing in championship contenders matches? AEW is doing that shyt too and it makes absolutely no sense.

AEW doesn't do that. They use their backwards ranking system that gets inflated on the Youtube shows. I don't remember ever seeing a "#1 contender's match" with the champions involved.
