Nakamura has been stuck as the IC champion for the last 2-3 years while NJPW pushed Tanahashi vs Okada (Tana being the "old" ace, Okada being the new ace). Nakamura is so over in Japan that they put the main event of Wrestle Kingdom 8 to a fan vote and the IC title won over the main belt (this could be more of a statement on the guy challenging for the main belt at that time, but point still stands). Nakamura wasn't enthralled with the fact that despite being 1B to whoever was holding the main belt between Tana and Okada he was never going to get that push again, so he dipped to America.
