When you look at the lingering social, political, and mental effect, The Atlantic Slave Trade might be the worst thing to ever happen in human history.

All the bloodshed, lost life, lost time, and the fact that racism is still taking lives today.

Colonialism ran rampant for almost 200 years, in some ways still lingering and the racism that exists in our society is a direct consequence of it.

The Slave trade was basically ran by the Portuguese, they set up shop in Africa in the late 1400's, and they were really the only Euros that really knew Africa, and African politics.

Yeah and the British and the French were already pretty powerful economically at that point and had fought a bunch of wars against each other. This was around the time mercantilism begins and the Europeans wanted to establish "God, Gold and Glory" throughout the world. This literally meant spreading the word of God to "civilize" other people, they would seek out your natural resources for this, usually fukking you over in the deal and would enrich themselves immensely throughout the exchanges. This is where colonialism began.

European cacs truly believed in their eyes and worldview that they were BETTER and more advanced and had to spread their way of life around the world. Mostly, they wanted resources. Whatever it was. Ivory, Furs, Spices, Silks, various metals and the most precious of all, humans. Also many more. They searched the whole world for these things and established their influence where they saw fit. They fought tooth and nail to make this possible. THEY HAD TO (in their eyes). The Kings and Queens of Europe had to have their finest silks and furs, grand pianos and the sweetest tea with their biscuits. All of this expanded rapidly with the development of the Atlantic Slave Trade, which coincided with a time period of highest periods of wealth in human history, all made possible on the backs of slaves throughout various "colonies" in the world.

The ravaging of Africa is the greatest tragedy of human history.

good to know, thanks. by the way do you know any books or resources where I can read more about this?

Afro-Latino Voices Narratives from the Early Modern Ibero-Atlantic World, 1550-1812

Is a pretty good book to read. It really shows how the Portuguese got a foothold in Africa. It starts detailing the relationship between African Kingdoms and Portugal. Then the experiences of Blacks in Spanish Americas, Spain, Brasil, and Portugal. The book has letters, wills and other documents written or asked to be written by Blacks. Its really interesting and great book for research purposes

you know whats crazy, is that 1.3 million went to Central America and there's barely a trace of them left.

Nah, they're noticeable in Panama, Nicaragua and Belize.
Yep my mom's whole side is black Panamanian. The thing is unless you GO over there you wouldn't know.

My great grand dad was actually a pimp over there. He used to pimp out women to American soldiers back in the day. He was also black as night. But to the average American unless he opened his mouth they'd never think he spoke a lick of Spanish.

Most of them left to the Carib islands. The only ones remaining are the ones in Panama and Belize.
Are you sure it isn't the other way around? A number of Jamaicans, St. Vincentians etc moved to Central America.

Have you ever been to Belize or Panama, breh? :what: Just because these countries arent majority black the blacks are still there.

Hell, United States of America is 14% black but you see a lot of them because of TV and the fact that most blacks in America rather live in Major Cities which also gives them more visibility. BUt outside of major American cities there arent manyblacks to be seen.

In thos countries it's the opposite. Black people grew up and stay in the country-side. I went to Costa Rica and only saw a few black people here and there in the Capital..... then I went to the countryside (Limon) and was like
Theres more to Central America then just Panama and Costa Rica and many (if not most) of the blacks in those countries are two or three generations removed from the Caribbean. My point is the original 1.4million slaves sent to Central America have been mostly absorbed into the mestizo population

They make up about 15%, and they're mostly concentrated in the Esmeralda region.

Blacks have been systematically bred out in parts of Central and South America. Blacks there are facing apartheid-like conditions today, and since they haven't undergone a civil rights revolution like the U.S., it's almost part and parcel of day to day life there. There are clear social strata in these countries and you have blacks at or near the bottom. No economic empowerment, no political empowerment, vastly undereducated (compared to their European-descended counterparts). This is a level of marginalization not seen by black Americans since the 1960s. We are talking about people who are almost non-existent in the media. It's not surprising when people are ignorant to the fact that there are actually black people in Brazil. Their colonizers really did a number on these people. Sometimes I feel there just needs to be an exodus of blacks back to Africa. There are lusophone countries like Angola, Cape Verde, Mozambique etc where they could relocate to. Spanish speakers could relocate to Equatorial Guinea. Black people really need to start understanding their value. The potential of our human capital really needs to start getting tapped into.
