This undercurrent has literally always existed in American politics.
You gotta have a goldfish memory if you think this shyt is "new".
What happened to Mexican immigrants ?
what happened to Asian immigants?
The Irish? Italians? Blacks during reconstruction?
Anyone who thinks this is "new" or a result of "Trump" is incredibly fukking naive.
Something doesn't have to be "new" to be increasing because of Trump. Why are you just ignoring that the number shifted from 12% to 33% in just six years?
Reagan was personally racist, and Bush had tons of racist fans, but the direct racism of their policies wasn't even close because no one was allowed to say those things out loud. They had to use dog whistles or indirect impacts if anything at all. And Republicans were voting for guys like Dole, Bush, McCain, Romney....mild moderates who didn't click off the White Nationalist check boxes at all. Meanwhile, Trump and his Administration are out there explicitly blocking Affirmative Action, DEI, payments for Black farmers, Black history in education, voting rights legislation, civil rights investigations, disparate impact policies, etc. while Trump and his supporters shout out racist shyt on a weekly basis with no repercussions. It is obvious that when the sort of language that someone like Trump uses goes unchecked, it increases the boldness and reach of racist behavior among the masses and in government alike.
After Trump, do you really imagine that a McCain or Romney-like figure is going to be nominated again anytime soon? Do you think that anyone could become the frontrunner without race-baiting like Desantis or JD Vance?
