It’s wild how most people like to live around others who share their cultural background and norms. Right?

Is that a new concept for you?

30% tax (I think) on your paycheck in New York and high cost of living will turn that paycheck into a joke.

After taxes rent that's about $60k for the year in a high cost area.

I'm sure you need internet, utilities, metro card, monthly phone, monthly subscription services, etc.

vs

$1k-$1.5k/month for everything: rent, food, etc.

If you saved $10k and you got $150 for rent, you can basically put a roof over your head for years while the rest of the money is on other basic needs.

I've spent way too much of my life in Bangkok and it's one of my least favorite cities in the world.

It's probably the single most superficial city I've ever lived in. All anyone cares about is making money and looking good, so the sex trade dominates the city center and everything else is interchangeable blandness. The city's politics are regressive as fukk, corruption is rampant, intellectual life is completely dead, mainstream culture (movies, music, books) is superficial trash, religious life is just inconsequential lip service and superstition. Absolutely any sort of crime can thrive if you pay off the right cops, insane debauchery is right out in the open even when it's technically illegal. No one gives a shyt about education or even attending classes, the only purpose is to get marks so they can qualify for a job and could care less if they learn anything. A quarter of the city's population lives in slums and hardly anyone cares or is doing anything about it. Most of the NGOs are run by foreigners cause locals don't even bother, there's no overriding social edict outside of "love the king" [now he's dead], "make your money", and "smile". A coalition between military dictators and the old rich control politics and just cancel elections and overthrow any PM they don't like, the rural folk hate them but city folk don't even care. Current king is a downright horrible person. Food is okay but gets old quick. Pollution is really bad, traffic congestion is horrible so you better hope your route is on the metro. And in terms of weather, a lot of the year is hot as fukk and/or super muggy, so you must only visit during the good times.

Positives (just so I'm not a dikk): People really do smile. Food is clean and safe so you ain't gotta worry about getting sick like you do a lot of places. Metro is convenient and can get you to a lot of the city. And if you're into people-watching, Bangkok has some of the most elite people-watching fukkery you can imagine, though guarantee you'll end up wanting to either throw up or punch someone in the face once you've seen too much.

I spent a lot of time in chiang mai. Absolutely loved that place. Better than Bangkok imo. Less sleazy.

I could have easily lived there. Even if you struggle with the language at the beginning most people can speak rudimentary English. Whilst you pick it up

The people were great and just the speed of life was so good. I was staying away from the main tourist areas. More of where the actual Thai people lived.

Your money will go far out there if you're a digital nomad kinda person.

Still think about the night markets.

Chiang Mai is a lot better than Bangkok. I can see how it would be too quiet for a lot of people though. Only real negative I have to say about it is that crop burning pollution was killer. But so much more chill than Bangkok without all the debauchery, crime, crowdedness, and image-focused bullshyt. Far better nature access too.

I can't say it's "a lot better". That 100% depends on what you are looking for. That's like saying Buffalo is much better than NYC. Maybe, but that's a huge "depends".

You need to read that comment in the context of my previous comment. Like I said, Chiang Mai might be too quiet for some people, but Bangkok is a wasteland for humanity.

And this is coming from someone from LA. :russ:
