30 Year Late Pass: I Just Discovered Flame of Recca

Was browsing the Yu Yu Hakusho subreddit and came across a thread talking about this show.

I had never heard about it up until last night and people were saying it was a YYH rip off and YYH is my GOAT along with DBZ so I had to check it out. I did some research and apparently the anime has the same producer and composer as the YYH anime.

Got a couple episodes in and it's cool so far even though it's definitely shown it's age. Dub kind of sounds ass so I'll stick with the sub. I am sort of seeing the similarities though. The main character has Yusuke vibes, Domon is obviously Kuwabara and I left off at the episode where they meet the water swordsman and he's definitely a mix of Kurama and Hiei.

That opening theme absolutely slaps though.

What are your thoughts on this show? I'm really surprised I've never heard of it up until now.

I put this and Outlaw star in the same class. Very solid animes who were just victims of being similar to all time classics. But yea it's a good show and def worth the watch.

Some thoughts as I’m about halfway through episode 17:

-Amazing intro song like I said before. I don’t think I’ve seen a 90s anime with a wack intro.
-The show was ok but was feeling kind of generic until I got to the flashback where the explained the story of Recca, Kurei and Kagehoshi. That’s where it really started to pick up and I got intrigued by the plot.
-I get the Yu Yu Hakusho comparisons but it looks like the creator of this is inspired by Togashi as a whole. There’s a character that shows up that looks exactly like Netero from Hunter x Hunter.
-I haven’t started the actual tournament but I’m getting Dark Tournament vibes and I love that. The tension is boiling.
-I wonder if Naruto took any inspiration from this or is this just regular Japanese ninja lore. I’m seeing space-time jutsus, Hokages, etc.
-I like Madogus as a concept and the whole tournament being a front for the main villain to collect them is a pretty clever twist.
-Why is Kurei so ? I hope this gets explained later lol.
-The soundtrack is pretty nice too. There’s a song in here that sounds exactly like Paul Phoenix’s theme from Tekken 3.It must have been taken from the same sample CD.
