Wow.
Imam looked great. Dominating win. He was really impressive inside, looking like he had some Mayweather skills being on the ropes dodging punches and landing the more clean ones. And when he is controlling the fight on the outside he uses a great jab to the head and body. Dude could be a problem at 140.
JCC. Finally. He has been picking on smaller fighters at 160, beating them by bludgeoning and not showing superior skills. His power still looked skeptical at 160. He moves up to 168, fights a 160 lb fighter and struggles. Now at 173 for the first time fighting a guy as big or slightly bigger than him. Fonfara said his punches had little power. We wanted to see if his chin was legit vs. someone with a chance of actually testing it. Long term we will see what it really is, but Fonfara proved that JCC can't hide behind it like at 160 and needs to win more of the fight off technical skills.
JCC really is best suited at 168. Physically that looks like a great division for him as if he is in shape he should make the weight and guys will be comparably sized. 175 is a bad division for him. Fonfara pushed him around and got to his chin...imagine what Kovalev, Beterbiev, or Stevenson would do.
JCC has some serious rebuilding to do and I am not sure where his career really goes from here. He needs to settle on a weight class and to keep him winning and making money he needs to stay away from upper tier fighters.
And he appears delusional. He thought he was winning the fight? He was thoroughly dominated. A rematch would just be a repeat of what happened.
How will his fan base handle this loss? JCC asked the for the fight to be stopped. A lot of his fans loved that he continued the family tradition of fighting with toughness and determination.
I will take my L in the fight predictions for the JCC L in the ring.
Fonfara looked shaky vs. Stevenson, but showed great determination to keep trying to be effective. I would like to see him get more opportunities and if Stevenson can't get Kovalev, I would welcome a rematch with Fonfara.
