SAN DIEGO – Julio Cesar Martinez moves up in weight yet somehow arrived at the much bigger man at the scale.
The reigning WBC flyweight titlist is at risk of losing out on his challenge of former four-division champion Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez after failing on two separate occasions to make the 115-pound junior bantamweight limit. Martinez was two full pounds over the mark at 117 pounds on the first attempt, returning to the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) scale nearly two hours later where officially weighed 116.4 pounds.
Per CSAC rules, Martinez will be fined payable to Gonzalez—ever the professional who weighed 114.7 pounds on his first attempt. As of Friday morning, the fight was in jeopardy of being canceled. The fight is currently scheduled to headline a DAZN telecast Saturday evening from Pechanga Arena in San Diego, California.
Nicaragua’s Gonzalez (50-3, 41KOs) was originally due to face lineal/WBA junior bantamweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada (42-3, 28KOs) in their highly anticipated rubber match. The third fight between the pair of future Hall of Famers has now twice fallen through, both due to Covid. Estrada tested positive in January, having to shut down training camp in withdrawing from the fight.
Mexico City’s Martinez (18-1, 14KOs; 2ND) agreed to take the fight despite being asked on just six weeks’ notice and barely two months removed from his most recent title defense last November. The move up in weight figured to serve well for Martinez, who has repeatedly struggled to make weight along with having to withdraw from several fights due to injury or illness over the past two years.
Another one nearly bit the dust for Martinez, though an agreement appears to have been reached satisfying all parties. The unprofessionalism of Martinez was not well received by Gonzalez’s extended camp and fans on site, who engaged in a brief shouting match with Team Martinez following the second weigh-in attempt.
Gonzalez-Martinez received support from the WBC, who has offered its Diamond belt at stake and originally with the winner eligible to next challenge Estrada who still serves as the WBC “Franchise” champion. That is now only at stake for Gonzalez, though unlikely to be immediately enforced even with a win—Estrada is already ordered to next face WBA ‘World’ junior bantamweight titlist Joshua Franco in an ordered title consolidation clash presently eyed for June in San Antonio should the two come to terms.
Martinez was the only fighter to miss weight during the official commission weigh-in. The remaining 17 fighters on the card—including Gonzalez—all did their job at the scale. The ceremonial weigh-in will take place 1:00 p.m. local time/4:00 p.m. ET live on DAZN, at which point BoxingScene.com will report the rest of the weights.
