Dillian Whyte weighed in Friday afternoon at close to his weight for his impressive knockout of Dereck Chisora in their rematch two years ago.
London’s Whyte stepped on the scale at 247¼ pounds for his rematch against Alexander Povetkin on Saturday night, about five pounds less than he weighed for their first fight. Russia’s Povetkin, the WBC interim heavyweight champion, officially weighed in at 228¼ pounds.
Their immediate rematch will take place at Europa Point Sports Complex in Gibraltar (Sky Sports Box Office; DAZN). A crowd of approximately 500 will be allowed to attend the card headlined by Povetkin (36-2-1, 25 KOs) and Whyte (27-2, 18 KOs), who weighed 246½ pounds the day before he knocked out Chisora in the 11th round of their second fight in December 2018 at O2 Arena in London.
The 32-year-old Whyte weighed 252¼ pounds for his fifth-round knockout loss to Povetkin on August 22 in Brentwood, England. The 41-year-old Povetkin came in Friday slightly heavier than he weighed August 21 (224 pounds).
The Jamaican-born contender handled Povetkin relatively easily during the first four rounds that night on the grounds of Matchroom Boxing’s headquarters. Whyte dropped Povetkin twice during the fourth round, in which an aged, tired Povetkin appeared as if he were ready to be knocked out.
The former WBA champion managed to recover between the fourth and fifth rounds, well enough to unload an incredible left uppercut that knocked Whyte cold. Povetkin viciously sent Whyte crashing to the canvas, beneath a bottom rope.
Referee Mark Lyson immediately stopped their scheduled 12-round fight for Whyte’s WBC interim championship.
Whyte began calling for the rematch he was owed in his contract that night.
The second fight initially was scheduled for November 23. It was postponed until January 30 because Povetkin tested positive for COVID-19 early in November.
Povetkin needed more time to prepare for their rematch, and it was postponed again, until March 6. It eventually was reset for Saturday night.
Povetkin-Whyte II will headline a Sky Sports Box Office pay-per-view show in the United Kingdom (£19.95; 6 p.m. GMT). DAZN will stream it in the United States (2 p.m. ET; 11 a.m. PT) and approximately 200 additional countries.
