I don't really think that his base matters in terms of changing minds, though. It's that it would have been just one more way he turned off voters who could actually be swayed.

In NC more than half of the republicans who have voted so far, have casted their ballot earlier than they did in 2020. The plurality of those who voted early in 2024, but didn't vote at all in 2020 are unaffiliated. In NC statewide races in 2020, Democrats won unaffiliates by margins of 3 to 12 points. Biden won them by 4. The overall electorate was R+3. It's currently R+.03 over Unaffiliates and R+1.2 over Democrats.
