This is a really bad look for him. Elite players running from the grind smh.
But they could have gotten something if they traded him. Even just a week before free agency, they could have traded his rights. Tough to see a guy like that go for nothing.
Yeah that's true. What sucks for them is tkachuk is a FA next year they either gotta sign him now or probably trade him during the season.

Pierre Luc Dubois already wants out of Winnipeg and wants to come to Montreal. 
Dude even attended the draft because he was so sure he would be traded to the Habs and presented on the draft floor.
Says he does not intend to sign long term in Winnipeg. I'd prefer we let him hit UFA in 2 years rather than giving up any good young players or prospects. If we can suck bad enough next season to draft Bedard and then sign Dubois in 2 years, we will be contender for a really long time.
