Anyone that's turning their nose up at the Brook Lopez selection didn't watch enough Bucks games this season, nor do they understand the Bucks' defensive scheme. He literally anchored the best defense in the entire league and had more responsibility on that end than any other player on his team.

#1 interior defender (players shot -15% inside the paint against him; players shot -17% inside the RA against him)
#2 in block shots (even more impressive he did it averaging 27 minutes)
Top-5 in altering shots.

Milwaukee Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer believes Brook Lopez turning into 'one of the league's best defensive anchors', will define the Bucks' championship aspirations.

Eric Bledsoe wouldn’t shut up about it.

For two months before the NBA shut down in March, just about any question to the Bucks point guard about his team’s defensive performance elicited a simple response:

“Brook should be defensive player of the year.”

That sentence being used and heard frequently has turned Bledsoe into the manager of the “Brook Lopez for NBA Defensive Player of the Year” campaign.

Yes, Brook anchored their defense this season, and yes, the Bucks defensive scheme was based upon funneling drives right into Brook - Coach Bud has spoken about this regularly throughout the season. Giannis winning DPOY was largely narrative-based, add to the fact that whatever his defensive value was in reality, for the Bucks, still doesn't take away from how important and influential Brook was on that end.
