Malik Newman chooses Jayhawks for transfer

Mississippi State transfer Malik Newman is headed to Kansas.

The 6-foot-3 Newman, who was recruited by Bill Self and the Jayhawks as a top-10 player coming out of high school, told ESPN he chose the Jayhawks after also taking visits to NC State, Oregon and Western Kentucky.

"I'm glad they wanted me again," said Newman, who struggled last season as a freshman under Ben Howland. "I love the basketball culture at Kansas, the way Bill Self holds guys accountable and love the atmosphere."

Newman was one of the top recruits in the country coming out of high school in Mississippi. He was pursued by Kansas and Kentucky but chose to stay close to home and play for Howland, who had just replaced Rick Ray at Mississippi State.

But Newman, widely considered a one-and-done player, averaged just 11.3 points per game last season while shooting 39 percent from the field. He declared for the NBA draft but withdrew and then decided to transfer.

Newman said the opportunity to sit out and improve his game against one of the nation's top backcourts -- Devonte' Graham and Frank Mason III -- played into his decision. Mason will be a senior in 2016-17, while Graham is a junior.

"It's the right place for me to be," Newman said. "I can compete against those guys every day, and that will make me better. It also allows me to get comfortable with the system."

Newman said his confidence was shaken while struggling with his role last season.

"I can't lie," he said. "I was playing at times with a sense of worrying about making a mistake, and that's not the way I need to be playing."

Newman said Self and his staff sold him on the opportunity to be a playmaker in the backcourt.

"They just said they want me to get back to the player I was," Newman said. "I told the staff that I don't need to play the point. They just want me to handle the ball, make plays and make the team better. That's what they sold me on."

@str8up I don't think he'll ever play at KU breh.

Apparently Self really likes him, maybe he can get his confidence back and be a pretty good player

Don't know how he'll be able to fit in tho, can't play point too small for the 2

He'll try to let him play the point initially is my guess. He has decent size for the position he just has absolutely no feel for playing it. But there's some talent there as a scorer and I believe the numbers showed he was a pretty solid catch and shoot guy. He'll probably put him in a situation where he uses a lot of ball screens when he's handling the ball.

Top Non-US Prospects in Fiba U17
1. Dzanan Musa - probably the most hyped Euro prospect since Ricky Rubio at this stage. 6'8 has all the skills, can run pick n roll and hit shots with range and Is a good passer. Great length and pretty skinny but a solid frame. He has solid athletic ability but defense is his biggest weakness rn. Also similar to Rubio someone who is so developed at this age he may not have the ceiling of some other guys but still a top 3-5 pick whenever he enters draft imo.

2. RJ Barrett - supposed to be one of the Better players in the 2019 HS class, he was just a little disappointing to me. Obviously a big time talent but has a long way to go as far as understanding of the game. He is a year younger than most in the tournament tho, so that's understandable. Certainly has better wing skills than Wiggins at the same stage as well. Should become an excellent defender down the line, has all the tools. As long as he learns to hit jumpers off the dribble and works on his handle a bit, should be a star.

3. Yves Pons - he was the big surprise for me in this tournament. At about 6'8 230 he threw down some of the best dunks of the tournament, played terrific D against every position and was overall as good an athlete as there is in the tournament and that's including team USA. However he isn't just some raw athletic freak, he moved well without the ball, rotated with intelligence as a help defender and was skilled enough to play out on the perimeter. He barelly jumps when he shoots his outside shots but his form isn't horrible and I saw him hit several threes. Even if he never improves those perimeter skills that much, he can at least be a successful small ball 4 but considering his age and tools he should be able to play both the 3 and the 4 and of course may even grow to 6'9 or 6'10. Easily my favorite non-US player in the tournament. He did an excellent job guarding Musa but at times he gets overly aggressive and gets himself in foul trouble. Because of this he didn't he huge minutes for France but his on/off plus-minus is plus 36 so far i the tournament.

4. Jaylen Hoard - he was already known to me from last year's Euro U16 and was def Frances go to guy. Really long arms and about 6'7, with a solid jumper. Pons outshined him somewhat but he was very impressive as well and should be a first round pick eventually as long as he continues to develop. Certainly has three and D potential

5. Sergi Martinez - only about 6'7 maybe 195 but isnt a great perimeter shooter. He played PF for Spain, still he is a well above average athlete with a terrific first step and a very good handle. Good length as well. If he can develop his outside shot (he has pretty good form) he can be an intriguing player.

6. Ragip Atar - 6'11 Turkish big who completely dominated Simi shyttu yesterday. Very good length, mobility and touch around the basket. He is kind of stuck behind Ahmet Duran in the Turkish rotation. Duran is prob one of the better players in this tournament and better than Atar rn but he is undersized to play center at higher levels and way too slow to guard other position. Excellent passer, probably the 2nd best passer in this tournament besides Valicka (Lithuanian PG). Atar is a better prospect easily and has prob the best defensive potential out of any non US big in the tournament. Also a pretty decent passer himself

Some recruiting experts including Jerry Meyer are now saying Porter Jr is the best player in his class

Still think Ayton and Mamba have much higher ceilings but Aytons a quirky dude though I heard he played real well today when he faced Bagley. He usually needs to be motivated and play someone near his level to be at his best which he doesn't face much in high school

Draft experts, if the Heat draft top 5 in 2017, who would be the best player for them?

I guess it depends on the Bosh situation and what Winslow does this year

Dennis Smith would be a good choice, or Giles if you're picking 4/5 and Bosh is not coming back

Josh Jackson seems like a Heat kind of guy too but that depends on Winslow/Johnson's play
