Welcome to the new year my film room friends, We're going to start the year off right with a top 10 list of my favorite genre in movies, science fiction. This genre is stacked with superb films, and we aren't going to get into semantics about what is and what isn't scifi, if you consider something science fiction, put that bytch on your list. We're doing a top 10, number your list 1-10 and please include 5 honorable mentions (it should be easy for this genre with the amount of quality films). So let me start us off, with my top 10 science fiction film list.
1. 2001: A Space Odyssey - Stanley Kubrick
one of the most incredible films created by a human being, meticulously shot and visually flawless, presents science fiction ideas that will be redone over and over and over in future films created by other science fiction directors.
2. Terminator 2 - James Cameron
one of the greatest heelturns from the first movie to the sequel, Arnold is now the hero of the film, while in the first he was the villain. I love both films a lot, but to me terminator 2 is slightly better because it has aged much more gracefully. Visually it looks like a film that was made TODAY, there are no visual flaws. Terminator 1 has some terrible stop motion shyt with the terminator at the end that irks the fukk out of me, but I love arnold as the villain. What's amazing about terminator 2 is that he isn't even allowed to kill people, yet it's one of the best scifi-action flicks of all time. Oh, and something I realized while I was stoned, how difficult it would be to portray a realistic robot. Arnold's performance is fukking impeccable man, and it would be easy for this type of movie to not be emotionally stirring, but I cried like a little bytch when Arnold went down with the thumbs up. Movie is literally perfection on film.
3. Alien - Ridley Scott
Where do I begin with this film? Visually stunning, mysterious, horrifying and a landmark of the genre. The art design by H.R. Giger is truly unique and incredible, fantastic music, great script and an amazing performance from Sigourney Weaver as one of the first strong female leads who don't need no man to save her. Horrifying and intense, one of my favorite films that I've rewatched at least 100 times.
4. The Matrix - Wachowski Brothers
Where to begin with this one. One of the most unique and amazing executions of science fiction ideas. A mindfukk of a movie, I remember this being one of the first movies I bought on DVD. Great martial arts combat scenes with some wirefu type shyt going on, and of course we all remember how epic "bullet-time" was. Such unique ideas in this movie, especially with how they bring people out of the matrix itself, finding their signal etc, how neo refuses to accept reality, etc. Reloaded to me, is still sick as fukk, but yeah, revolutions was fukking ass. But animatrix was also dope as fuuuuuck. The Wachowski's are very fukking interesting film makers to me.
5. Children of Men - Alfonso Cuaron
This film solidified Alfonso Cuaron as one of my favorite directors, and also introduced me to Emmanuel Lubezki whom is arguably the best Director of Photography in the game right now. Another unique scifi dystopian idea, humans have become infertile for an unknown reason, the film takes place in Great Britain, there is civil unrest, and bombings by the government disguised as terrorist activities to drum up support. Visually it's what I call retro-scifi, It's like a mixture of new technology and current tech. Fantastic direction, performances, and one of the best long-take scenes I've ever seen in cinema history.
6. 12 Monkeys - Terry Gilliam
Terry Gilliam, such a weird motherfukker, but god damn if this movie isn't incredible. Great performance from Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt. Another time travel mindfukk movie
7. Minority Report - Steven Spielberg
this movie is classic as fukk to me. really cool fukking idea, precrime, fantastic performance from Tom Cruise, superb direction, great music courtesy of the GOAT John Williams. Another Phillip K dikk classic.
8. Blade Runner - Ridley Scott
Phillip K dikk strikes again, Ridley Scott with superb direction, this is a divisive film, seems like you either love it or think its kind of meh. I love the exploration of artificial intelligence and what exactly constitutes a human being. Rutger Hauer was fukking terrifying as Roy. This movie kind of weirds me out (in a good way), something about Ridley Scott, he knows how to create an "atmosphere" in his films. Sean Young was sexy as fukk.
9. Star Wars Episode V: Empire strikes back - Irvin Kreshner
this shyt wasn't even directed by George Lucas (maybe for the better) but its my favorite star wars film. I don't think much more needs to be said about it, its star wars. Where my love for scifi began.
10. Total Recall - Paul Verhoeven
Hey, remember that guy Phillip K dikk who wrote all those scifi short stories? Well, fukk, here he is again, with Total Recall. fukking Arnold Schwarzenegger is fantastic in this, Paul Verhoeven at his ultra-violent finest. Another crazy ass film with some awesome scifi ideas courtesy of Phillip K dikk. This is a really really really fun movie, I enjoy this film quite a bit, and have rewatched it over and over since I was a child.
Honorable mentions:
1. Gattacca - this film could possibly make my list in place of Total Recall (but based on the pure rewatchability of total recall, i doubt it). I'm going to rewatch it and see how I feel.
2. Moon - fukking great film, great mind fukk that I wasn't expecting, but I haven't felt a need to rewatch it as much as my other favorite scifi films
3. Source Code - Really fun ass movie, Jake Gyllengawd is awesome in this, and Michelle Monaghan is sexy as all fukk.
4. Donnie Darko - This might make my list in the end too, I've rewatched this film a lot and still love it. Great soundtrack, and a bright start to Jake Gyllengawd's career.
5. Her - man, I love this movie, and it actually got really deep on the scifi and philosophical ideas, the movie ends with the singularity. scar jo's voice gets my dikk hard, I fukking love her. Joaquin Phoenix is absolutely phenomenal, and think about how he's just acting by himself, talking to his cell phone for most of the movie, but his emotions are real. Man, he's a fantastic actor.
I know I'm going to get shyt for not even mentioning Back to the Future, and while it is a certified sci-fi classic I tend to gravitate towards more serious subject matter. I love all the back to the future films but they have a little too much comedy for my darker tastes.
