As it turns out, the SEC hasn’t seen the last of
Tray Matthews.
In the same tweet that he announced he was leaving Georgia, Tray Matthews stated that “
Auburn or Louisville will be my new home.” In another tweet posted to his Twitter account early Saturday afternoon, Matthews revealed he would be moving over to the SEC West and continuing his collegiate playing career on The Plains with the Tigers.
AU, it should be noted, has yet to formally announce Matthews addition to the roster.
To satisfy NCAA transfer rules, Matthews will be forced to sit out the 2014 season. He will have three years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2014.
Earlier this offseason, Matthews was one of four Bulldogs
arrested on multiple counts of theft by deception. Each player had been accused of essentially double-dipping: taking their UGA stipend checks, cashing them via a mobile app, then cashing the actual check elsewhere.
Matthews was a four-star member of UGA’s 2013 recruiting class, rated as the No. 5 safety in the country. Despite being limited by
a hamstring issue for the early part of the season, Matthews started six games at safety as a true freshman in 2013.
