Who does Clemson have at QB and WR tho to replace Boyd/Watkins?
They might be in trouble this year
Bro let everyone keep thinking that about my squad. Dabo has recruited at both positions very well. For QB we have:
Cole Stoudt... [while he doesn't have Boyd's arm he's very accurate when given time]...who is 6'4, 220lbs...son of a former NFL qb and has been in the system for years. He actually has the school record for most completed passes in a row. He's not going to be a running threat...he is effective enough to get some yards as needed. So while some of those bombs Boyd threw may not be his strong suit...he reads the whole field way better than Tajh did and will find the open man.
Deshaun Watson... 5 star recruit that was an Early Enrollee. He's mature beyond his years and has basically been running a Spread in High school since a Freshman so he picked up the playbook very quickly. Dabo has already said that he's going to play often to ensure he gains experience for Next season. He was kinda skinny when he got to Clemson and has already added 15lbs to his frame since January. He's going to be special...just not this year
WR/TE
If you've noticed in the NFL over the past few seasons Clemson has put Jacoby Ford, Dwayne Allen, Jaron Brown, Nuk Hopkins, Sammy Watkins, Martavis Bryant and Brandon Ford all in the league. With that said...someone will step up.
Mike Williams....he played as a freshman last season and it a possession type WR who is tall and can make tough catches. He's gotten bigger and better at running routes/blocking this offseason.
Adam Humphries...Think of Wes Welker. All Hump' does it make key catches. He's also on the return team for his sure hands.
Jordan Leggett... He's going to be a matchup nightmare this year for teams that try to cover him with a LB. He's 6'5 250 and can run like a WR....think Vernon Davis.
Jay Jay McCollough...while shorter than Leggett his is actually faster and a better blocker. He use to be a RB in HS and will actually line up with Leggett at times this year.
Charone Peake... He was actually rated higher than Sammy was in the recruiting class. He's been hurt a bunch though and was poised for a breakout season last year b4 being injured. He's going to start the UGA game [he had 5 catches 56yds vs them last season] and instantly makes this WR corps more dangerous with his presence. He was faster than Sammy [but Sammy's acceleration is world class] and a little taller.
Germone Hopper... Fast slot WR that is dangerous in space. He had a decent season last year but once Tajh clued in on Sammy...he got lost in the fold.
Others... We have some very young talent here that will wow some people. Clemson recruited a bunch of WRs [Artavis Scott, Trevian Thompson and Demarre Kitt will see the field this year...with Thompson probably emerging as the next star].
Summary... Of course Clemson will take a step back as far as QB's go but you have to remember...most Spread systems are plug and play... think RG3 to Petty...Baylor didn't miss a beat. QB rushing stats may decline but completion % will increase b/c Stout will find the right person on most plays. As for WR...no team can replace a player like that...but Clemson does have a plethora of WR/TE to minimize the loss. Coach Morris called plays to maximize Sammy's ability...now he's adjusted it back to get more people involved...which once it clicks will be more deadly than last season.
Clemson's bigger concern is RB and now OL...we just lost our top returning runner to a ligament tear in his foot and is done for the season. But the talent is there but it'll be by committee ala LSU for a while. As for OL...we just had a top backup decide to transfer after being suspended for 2 games. So that means we are 1 injury away from playing a freshman. The blessing is that the OL coach cross trains everyone on the line at at least 2 positions to allow for flexibility.
Clemson's Defense [yep...thanks for giving us Brent Venerable...lol] will carry the team until the Offense clicks.
