i disagree with shaw that giving the athletes a stipend will fundamentally alter the coach/player dynamic and turn it into the supposedly impure employee/employer relationship of the nfl. i think hes a good guy so ruining the so called purity of the college experience might be his concern, but anything like that coming out the mouth of a coach sounds like hes shilling for his university and the ncaa.

Braxton Miller could be in store for a big season at Ohio State.
As we count down 50 days until the start of the 2014 college football season, ESPN Insider Travis Haney is answering at least one big question a day until South Carolina and Texas A&M’s kickoff on Aug. 28.

Heisman contenders, breakout freshmen, conference winners -- it will all be covered as part of Insider’s Ultimate Season Preview.

Today’s question: With Johnny Football gone, who is the single most exciting player in the country? Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon? Georgia’s Todd Gurley? Jameis? Braxton?

You have to start with Jameis Winston to answer this one, as anything else would be disingenuous.

“He’s a goofy kid,” an ACC assistant told me, “but the kid can make plays. We couldn’t defend him.”

Winston is the player who rightfully beat out Johnny Manziel for the Heisman Trophy. And he became the must-watch player on par with Manziel from his very first game, a 350-yard, five-TD effort at Pitt on Labor Day night. The Hail Mary just before halftime at Boston College, one of the only half-threats of the season for the Seminoles, cemented him as a player of record. That all happened in September.

Like Manziel, Winston becomes more intriguing in his second season because he’s trying for a second Heisman -- and also because his off-field behavior has drawn TMZ-level interest from the general public, not just those with an affinity for college football.

But we know about Winston, and the odds that he’ll again win the Heisman are slim. If he doesn’t, who will? Most people will tell you Oregon’s Marcus Mariota, but I’m pushing pretty hard on Braxton Miller at Ohio State.

He might not be a projectable NFL QB -- though his coach, Urban Meyer, told me last spring that he is -- but that has never precluded QBs from being incredible, transcendent college players. You know that list: Tim Tebow, Eric Crouch, Troy Smith (maybe Manziel).

Miller will be tested because the Buckeyes’ line is green, but he’s mobile enough to negate some of that, and the skill players around him -- Dontre Wilson and Jalin Marshall, most notably -- should rise. As of today, Ohio State is my national title favorite, and Miller is my Heisman favorite.

But who else? Who could really surprise as an electric entertainer? Who will be must-see TV on Saturdays?

I’m looking for a Tavon Austin type, and I’ve heard from those close to the respective programs that Texas A&M freshman Speedy Noil and Oklahoma State Tyreek Hill each fit that mold. Each staff has been hesitant to publicly put too much on those first-year players (Hill is a juco transfer) -- but they cannot hide their excitement in private conversations.

However, let’s circle back to last season’s version of Noil and Hill: The most exciting player in college football could very well be Wilson, Miller’s teammate at Ohio State.

Last summer, we were all tabbing the guy as the “next Percy Harvin.” (Guilty. My hand’s up.) But can’t he be the next Percy Harvin as a sophomore?

Sometimes we give up too early on prospects. Just because he didn't put up massive totals a year ago -- he did average 8.7 yards per touch, by the way -- doesn’t mean Wilson was a failure. He was just a small freshman who didn't yet merit a ton of touches. But the guy who was rated the No. 5 athlete in the Class of 2013, a player who once committed to Oregon as potentially the next D'Anthony Thomas, could be ready to reach star status.

Remember: Manziel redshirted. Winston redshirted. With an elite QB and other weapons, Wilson could be in for a big season.

Joe Mixon, University of Oklahoma running back and former Rivals.com five-star recruit, was involved in a serious altercation early this morning that led to the summoning of the Norman Police department, a source from within the Norman Police Department told SoonerScoop.com.

Norman police responded to an incident at Pickleman's Gourmet Café in Norman at 2:39 a.m. on Friday. A spokesman for Pickleman's gave no comment on the situation.

A synopsis of the report suggests aggravated assault and battery.

Sources indicated Mixon was not arrested at the scene as officers wanted to study security footage of the incident before filing any charges. Police did receive footage of the incident today.

The incident report obtained by SoonerScoop contains limited information, as one or more juveniles is involved. A spokesman for OU is aware of the incident and issued the following statement:

"We are aware of the matter and it is under internal review."

Norman Police told SoonerScoop.com a public information officer was not available to comment on the details of the incident.

Mixon was capping off a night of celebration as Thursday was his 18th birthday.

I don't really read sooner boards enough to be able to really verify posters with so called sources. So take this with a huge grain of salt.

This from another source.......................................... UPDATE (3:56 pm): Here is what we have from a source on the Joe Mixon situation:

1. Joe Mixon was at Pickleman’s last night. Our source was there as well.

2. Source tells us that a woman who appeared to be drunk came into Pickleman’s and starting “taking sh*t” to Joe for no apparent reason.

3. Source said Joe actually responded quite calmly to her.

4. Source said that while he (the source) was there, he never saw anyone hit anyone. Source also said that Joe never even raised his voice.

5. Source also told us that the woman involved left before he (the source) and Mixon left.

6. Another source tells us that Joe deleted his twitter account for reasons completely unrelated to this

I've already read like 3-4 versions of "What happened" and all say something different. SMH

1 said he punched her and "shattered her entire face"
Another said he punched her & then started crying b/c he knew he'd messed up
another said she pushed him and it was just an argument, nothing more

He seems like a good kid overall, and I dont say that about alot of these players. Hopefully none of this is true, or at least not to where it's all his fault
