The 20 tons of cocaine, with a street value estimated as high as $20 billion, represented nearly twice the amount of cocaine seized in the previous largest bust in the world -- 11 tons confiscated in Colombia in 1988. The largest previous cocaine bust in the United States took place in November 1987, when nearly 4 tons were seized in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

The warehouse apparently had been rented since 1987 and was used as a national distribution center for both the Cali and Medellin Colombian cocaine cartels, said John Zienter, chief of the Los Angeles office of the DEA.

Reiner said seized records indicated that 'at a minimum, in the last year, 60 tons of cocaine' had passed through the warehouse.
