Ishe Smith Decides To Retire from Boxing After Stoppage Loss

By Ryan Burton

Earlier tonight in Carson, California, super welterweight contest Erickson Lubin (20-1) dropped former champion Ishe Smith (29-11) 4 times in route to a TKO victory.

Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, Smith’s trainer, instructed referee Jack Reiss to stop their fight following the third round because Smith had taken too much punishment.

The 40-year-old Smith has been in the ring with several champions and prospects at both 154 and 160 pounds over his long career, winning some and losing some. One that had never happened to the Las Vegas native prior to tonight was a loss by stoppage.

The loss was the third in a row for Smith who lost competitive bouts to Tony Harrison and Julian Williams in the other two fights.

Smith took to his Facebook page shortly after the loss and praised Lubin and said that it was time to call it a day.

“Great shot, I never seen it or recovered after it, no excuses, we don’t make them from my era. This is a young man's game, I have did everything I wanted to do in my sport, I love you all, love my city, love my friends, my fans, and most importantly my family. I want to be around, grow old, watch my kids get old and married. I’m calling it a day, I wanna bullsh*t and get fat, seen what this game will do to people, it’ll f*** you up,” Smith wrote.

Smith made history in 2013 when he became the first Las Vegas born fighter to capture a world title when he defeated Cornelius Bundrage in his hometown of Detroit.

Just over a month for what we all cant wait to see...Spence vs Garcia: DARE TO BE GREAT.
I will be watching cause it's gonna feature Spence and Mikey afterall but I don't expect much competitiveness maybe barring for the first few rounds. It's boxing though, anything can happen, who knew that this dude Cancio would fold Machado like that...

"he just make em look like nobody, yall musta forgot"
Nah, he's actually fighting mediocre opponents.
Pedraza was an exception, Davis was getting props from everybody for that accordingly.

What was the point in bringing him this dude though? So Tank can go not even 1 full round after being out the ring for 10 months? Is this supposed to be their future star who they are building up?
Still think he lacks longterm concentration and dedication to be a great but an exciting fighter when he fights no doubt and he has "potential" just don't think he gonna bring out the maximum from it. It's understandable why PBC is looking at him as a high value guy, on a good day these fast twitch, athletic powerhouse types like Tank or Teofimo Lopez excites public like only a few others can do. Their strengths are very obvious at first sight even to casual viewers, if someone has great ring IQ, defense, footwork, technique, etc... that stuff is often not as apparent as having great reflexes, speed and power.
