Watched this last night and I thought it was a pretty damn great PPV. Not some all-timer or anything, but yet another in a long string of AEW hits.
Sure there were some matches that were fine and watchable but weren't the greatest (Hager/Dustin, which should have been at least 5 minutes shorter and featured 100% less of Hager's plastic-faced, amateur porn star wife. We can also file MJF/Cody here...shockingly dull for a chapter in such a hot blood feud that will probably go on until August or so) or were just a mess in general (Rose/Statlander...I think both have their value in the women's division, but they really need to do some work in building it up), but for the most part it was a very, very enjoyable experience.
Allin/Guevara was yet another example of how ridiculously huge Darby Allin could be if they handle him right (akin to how over Jeff Hardy got in 2008-2009) with Sammy Guevara having a ton of potential himself. Booking was intelligent as well, and a fantastic pick up after the opening match kind of depressed the crowd.
I'm not going to call Omega and Page/Young Bucks an all-timer like some people are doing, but I think it's highly impressive that they put on a 31 minute match with so many insane, over-the-top spots and I never got sick of it. Moreover, there isn't even anything I look at and want to obviously cut, despite it seemingly being the absolute definition of overkill. And that's not even getting into the story beats they all hit. I could definitely do another six months of Page/Bucks drama with Kenny's indecisive ass in the middle.
PAC/OC was pitch perfect for what they were trying to accomplish, even if it wasn't a 5 star classic or anything. Probably the most objectively fun match on the card, and not only because of Orange Cassidy's shenanigans. PAC was excellent, and the Best Friends and even the Lucha Bros. played their parts well. I'm hoping they save OC wrestling for rare, special occasions, and that PAC isn't forgotten when people talk about top-level, world championship level talent in AEW. I'd LOVE to see him with the belt at some point.
And finally, kudos to AEW for knowing when to close the chapter on a title chase and making the right decision with Moxley/Jericho. They'd done everything they possibly could in their current roles, Moxley was incredibly hot as a babyface (seriously, the pop he got for the finish was fukking insane), and Jericho was the perfect heel to pit against him. Match was good, if not great, but hit every single one of the story beats it needed to hit, made Moxley look fantastic, and ended at the exact moment it needed to. I'll be very interested to see where they go with Moxley's reign from here (possibly do a Jericho rematch, Lance Archer is a possible challenger, I figure they'll do Moxley and Omega at a show like All Out to renew that storyline, hell, even something like a Darby Allin TV defense wouldn't be out of the question), but things seem to be looking up for these guys.
Definite thumbs up PPV overall.
