Seven-Day Weights: Miguel Berchelt 133.6, Oscar Valdez 133.4
By Jake Donovan Published On Wed Feb 17, 2021, 07:23 AM EST
Miguel Berchelt and Oscar Valdez remain on course for their highly anticipated showdown this weekend.

Both boxers have complied with all pre-fight weight checks ahead of their WBC junior lightweight title fight this weekend. The latest came at the seven-day mark, where WBC title fight participants are required to be within 3% of the contracted weight limit.

Berchelt checked in at 133.6 pounds over the weekend, while Valdez’s weight was recorded at 133.4 pounds. Both were under the allowable 134-pound mark, rounded up from the 3% tolerable limit above the 130-pound divisional limit for Saturday’s bout, which airs live on ESPN from MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas.

Weight has never been an issue for either boxer over the course of their respective careers, nor has been the case for any point during their respective training camps.

The WBC calls for boxers to be no more than 10% above the limit 30 days out from fight night and no more than 5% at the 14-day point. For this bout, that puts the respective limits at 143 pounds (30 days) and 137 pounds (14 days; weight limit rounded up to the nearest pound).

Cancun’s Berchelt (38-1, 34KOs) weighed 142.8 pounds at the 30-day mark and 136 pounds for the 14-day weight check. Valdez (28-0, 22KOs)—a two-time Mexican Olympian from Nogales, Mexico—weighed 142.6 pounds and 136.4 pounds, respectively, at those same points.

Berchelt attempts the seventh defense of the WBC title he claimed in an 11th round knockout of Francisco Vargas in Jan. 2017. The bout will mark his first title fight since a one-sided 4th round stoppage of former secondary titlist Jason Sosa in Nov. 2019, having since claimed a 6th round knockout of countryman Eleazar Valenzuela in a lightweight fight last July in Mexico City.

Valdez previously reigned as a WBO featherweight titlist, making six successful defenses before abandoning his reign in the summer of 2019. Two appearances have followed at junior lightweight. Valdez climbed off the canvas to score a 7th round stoppage of Adam Lopez in Nov. 2019. Last summer saw Valdez become the first fighter to stop former title challenger Jayson Velez, doing so inside of ten rounds last July in the very venue hosting this weekend’s championship clash.

Both fighters are still required to come in at or below the 130-pound divisional limit at Friday’s official pre-fight weigh-in.

Berchelt vs. Valdez: Judges, Referee Named For Title Fight
By Jake Donovan

Published On Fri Feb 19, 2021, 08:04 PM EST

LAS VEGAS – Russell Mora has been tasked with serving as the third man for one of the biggest fights on the 2021 calendar.

The 24-year locally based ring official will oversee the junior lightweight title fight between Miguel Berchelt and Oscar Valdez at MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas (Saturday, ESPN/ESPN+, 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT). The three judges assigned to the scheduled 12-round main event are Dave Moretti, Patricia Morse Jarman and Max DeLuca.

Berchelt (38-1, 34KOs) will attempt to make the seventh defense of the WBC 130-pound title he claimed in an 11th round knockout of Francisco Vargas in Jan. 2017. Saturday’s bout will mark just his second career fight in Vegas, thus leaving him to perform in front of largely unfamiliar faces.

Conversely, Valdez (28-0, 22KOs) has fought several times in the past with Mora and Moretti among the assigned officials.

In fact, Mora, Moretti and DeLuca all worked Valdez’s 7th round stoppage of Adam Lopez in Nov. 2019. Moretti had the fight the widest, with Valdez leading 58-55 on his card at the time the fight was halted—with some taking exception to Mora stopping the fight when he did. DeLuca had Valdez trailing 57-56 by that point, with Valdez having suffered a 2nd round knockdown as the difference on his card.

Mora was also the referee for Valdez’s WBO featherweight title winning 2nd round knockout of Matias Carlos Rueda in July 2016. He also worked Valdez’s stoppage wins over former featherweight titlist Evgeny Gradovich (April 2016) and Chris Avalos (Sept. 2015).

Moretti is assigned to Valdez’s third straight fight. The 76-year old judge from Las Vegas was ringside for Valdez’s knockout wins over Lopez and most recently Jayson Velez. Moretti had Valdez winning just 85-84 at the time of his 10th round stoppage of Velez in this very venue last July. Morse Jarman was also a part of the judging panel for that fight, scoring it 89-80 for Valdez at the time of the stoppage.

Saturday will mark the first time either Moretti or Morse Jarman as a judge for a Berchelt fight.

DeLuca was also among the three judges for Valdez-Lopez and the only official for the main event who has previously worked fights involving both boxers.

The veteran judge had Valdez trailing 57-56 at the time of the stoppage. He has also worked two Valdez featherweight title fights—a 7th round knockout of Hiroshige Ogawa where all three judges (including Morse-Jarman) had the bout 60-53 at the stoppage in the first defense of his WBO featherweight title; and Valdez’s 12-round unanimous decision over Scott Quigg, with DeLuca scoring the bout 117-111 in favor of the defending champ.

DeLuca has worked two previous fights involving Berchelt, including his most recent title defense. He was granted an easy night at the office for Berchelt’s one-sided 4th stoppage of Jason Sosa in their Nov. 2019 title fight in Carson, California. DeLuca was also among the three-judge panel whom awarded Berchelt a 12-round unanimous decision over Japan’s former titlist Takashi Miura, scoring the contest 119-108 in favor of the Cancun-based boxer.

Morse Jarman has worked four previous bouts involving Valdez.

In addition to working with DeLuca for Valdez’s win over Ogawa and Velez, the 72-year old Las Vegas native was also assigned to Valdez’s 4th round knockout win over Gradovich. She was also one of the three judges for Valdez’ 2nd round stoppage of Corben Page in his second pro fight back in 2012.

The evening’s chief support pits Velez (29-7-1, 22KOs) versus unbeaten junior lightweight prospect Gabriel Flores Jr. (19-0, 6KOs). Veteran referee Tony Weeks gets the call to enforce the rules in the ring. The three judges assigned are Lisa Giampa (Las Vegas), Don Trella (Connecticut) and Steve Weisfeld (New Jersey).
