Collin must make it through his final three days of probation for a chance at a new beginning. He and his troublemaking childhood best friend, Miles, work as movers, and when Collin witnesses a police shooting, the two men’s friendship is tested as they grapple with identity and their changed realities in the rapidly-gentrifying neighborhood they grew up in.

Longtime friends and collaborators, Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal co-wrote and star in this timely and wildly entertaining story about friendship and the intersection of race and class set against the backdrop of Oakland. Bursting with energy, style, and humor, and infused with the spirit of rap, hip hop, and spoken word, "Blindspotting", boldly directed by Carlos López Estrada in his feature film debut, is a provocative hometown love letter that glistens with humanity.

I saw this trailer this weekend when I went to see "Sorry To Bother You"

I was gonna post a thread about it but I thought niccas would just ignore it not even to check it and see the potential this movie has.

This movie and The Hate You Give trailer

Look phenomenal ... Both was played in my viewing.

your stars are but dust on my shoes
This was good. Liked that it felt more like a stage play, and I think they handled such a wide array of topics surprisingly well.

They set it up so perfectly, to have the audience sympathetic with a felon on parole (Collin,) and seeing how he has to deal with incarceration, gentrification, race relations, and police brutality just to become a free man, they really drove the point home on how hard it is for black men in this country to stay free.

Also like that the white sidekick didn't just serve as an innocent vehicle to garner sympathy for white folks, and I think my folks in the bay will 100% relate to (or know someone like) the white character. His struggle to locate an identity for himself and the simultaneous (and perhaps even unknowing) disservice he does to his friend (and black folks as a whole) was brilliant.

It was truly exhausting to see everything fall squarely on the protagonist's shoulder. Collin was just trying to get off parole and yet everything/everyone around him is broken or flawed. Is the system set up for him to fail?

Dope flick. Shyt really had you tensing up. We need Coli brehs to support this one.

Overall I liked it. Observations. Did not know Oakland was gentrified like that. I expected a straight hood movie but it was different types of races. 2ndly, I kinda surprised it was no gay characters and just stuck to race. Positives. Loved the camera work, shots of Oakland and the music. There was a "Dream and Nightmares" scene that was very dope in terms of the artistic angle. The main character Collin was such a good actor. Not comparing him to Denzel, but he was Denzel-esque that he was able to convey emotions w/o saying words. And that niguh got bars. I loved how that brought out the PTSD that Black males face and the effect of trauma.

Negative: The white dude. I know he co-wrote it but he does not know how to act like w*gga. At the very least get somebody like Tommy from "Power" . I can at least buy him somewhat. That's not to say his character didn't have value. It did. He showed how Whites can do stuff without consequences and Blacks can't. The dialogue overall had that White people humor type of stuff. I was at a Black theatre ironically (usually I have to go to the burbs to see these type of films) and nobody was laughing that much. My other issue was the climax
Not buying this cop feeling remorse at all. This niguh shot him because he viewed him as a niguh. Simple as that. No reason to shoot somebody 4 times unless you see that way. So trying to get have feelings for somebody who views black people as less then human is an attempt to make White people feel better. Now it was dope how spit that acapella and was able to finally express himself. But I ain't buying.
Another issue I had was the gun
Why would he keep the gun after taking it from White boy. It would be in the straight trash can. He could got locked up or possibly died when those cops pulled up on him.
But overall I think i's a good debut and gives some food for thought on race, bias, Black male PTSD. I just thought some of the dialogue was too White at times. Finally, for those who against interracial dating (it's the Coli), don't waste your time. You'll be calling the Black women in negro bedwenches.

I didnt see any flaws in the women in this movie. They gave him advice and he chose not to listen. He had to let the friendship go to grow or at least change the dynamic of it. He didn't want to and thats why his girl knew she had to move on. He was in a perpetual state of childhood due to his own choices. Tryna live with his mother in his own room cmon son. End is sad cuz he basically gonna continue to do the same dumb shyt.

Couldn't take the fact this nygga started rapping in the most important scene of the movie, felt like c00nery. ManChild shyt to me I definitely wasnt feeling that part. And movie ends with him making no change.

.

I thought the cop was crying because he lost his wife and kid 3 days after killing an innocent man. He faced real consequences and regret for what he had done, although not the consequences we'd want for him.

Overall, I liked the movie a good bit. Felt like the dude who wrote this did a good job of making Oakland feel real.

Solid 8/10

From the previews I thought this was going to be a corny movie, but it turned out to be good. I like how they tackled black male issues, gentrification, and a decent storyline all in one. If you caught the white guy saying “I hate my father” when he’s kicking the other guy on the ground you can also make the case this movie tackled white identity issues.

I enjoyed Get Out over this and Sorry to Bother You, but at least there is a consistent flow of non traditional black lead movies coming out. Let’s see what Spike does with his new one.
