(CNN) -- Nineteen firefighters were killed Sunday battling a blaze in Arizona, the state forestry division said.
The vast majority were from Prescott, said Wade Ward with the Prescott Fire Department.
State forestry official Art Morrison said the firefighters were members of a "hotshot" crew, tasked with digging a fire line and creating an escape route.
"In normal circumstances, when you're digging fire line, you make sure you have a good escape route, and you have a safety zone set up," Morrison said. "Evidently, their safety zone wasn't big enough, and the fire just overtook them."
The crew was fighting the Yarnell Hill fire, which broke out Friday northwest of Phoenix. The fire has grown to 1,000 acres, damaged three homes and forced the evacuations of residents in the communities of Peeples Valley and Yarnell, Morrison said.
Authorities believe lightning sparked the blaze.

R.I.P. to those Firefighters. From what it says it looks like they made an error in judgement and sadly it cost them their lives.

RIP. I am shocked at that number of dead though. Highly unusual. Aside from 911, i doubt that has happened too many times before in the U.S. Someone fukked up royally somewhere that night.

They must have cared about their jobs. In L.A they just let everything burn up and spray the permiter of property with flame retardant.

the craziest thing is that this is the entire hotshot crew for yarnell, arizona. there are none left. they have to build a new crew from scratch

we need to invest in fire prevention. more dry plants need to be cleared near homes. a lot of wealthy people move way out into the desert, and these fields of dead trees and bushes can light up from natural causes, and then you have guys risking their lives to defend property.

we also probably have a beetle infestation that is killing off too many trees, causing them to dry out and become a great fuel source for fire.
