A Pregnant Teenager Died After Trying to Get Care in Three Visits to Texas Emergency Rooms

It took three ER visits and 20 hours before a hospital admitted Nevaeh Crain, 18, as her condition worsened. Doctors insisted on two ultrasounds to confirm “fetal demise.” She’s one of at least two Texas women who died under the state’s abortion ban.

Candace Fails screamed for someone in the Texas hospital to help her pregnant daughter. “Do something,” she pleaded, on the morning of Oct. 29, 2023.

Nevaeh Crain was crying in pain, too weak to walk, blood staining her thighs. Feverish and vomiting the day of her baby shower, the 18-year-old had gone to two different emergency rooms within 12 hours, returning home each time worse than before.

The first hospital diagnosed her with strep throat without investigating her sharp abdominal cramps. At the second, she screened positive for sepsis, a life-threatening and fast-moving reaction to an infection, medical records show. But doctors said her six-month fetus had a heartbeat and that Crain was fine to leave.

Now on Crain’s third hospital visit, an obstetrician insisted on two ultrasounds to “confirm fetal demise,” a nurse wrote, before moving her to intensive care.

By then, more than two hours after her arrival, Crain’s blood pressure had plummeted and a nurse had noted that her lips were “blue and dusky.” Her organs began failing.

Hours later, she was dead.

Fails, who would have seen her daughter turn 20 this Friday, still cannot understand why Crain’s emergency was not treated like an emergency.

But that is what many pregnant women are now facing in states with strict abortion bans, doctors and lawyers have told ProPublica.

“Pregnant women have become essentially untouchables,” said Sara Rosenbaum, a health law and policy professor emerita at George Washington University.

Disclaimer: (Because ppl are sensitive) I'm for the 100% access to abortion.

That being said; it's sick that people are now turning every "death by baby" into a national story to make a point.

These account for less than 3% (abortions due to danger to mother).

America watch a school of children get shot up and didn't want to change anything about it.

This isn't moving people legitimately anti-abortion. Most women used abortion as simply birth control and that's how most people look it at--irresponsiblity.

We actually should be fixing our healthcare system, because this is horrible.

RIP.

A dramatic rise in pregnant women dying in Texas after abortion ban

Exclusive analysis finds the rate of maternal deaths in Texas increased 56% from 2019 to 2022, compared with just 11% nationwide during the same time period.

Blame Obama for not codifying Roe vs Wade when he had the house and senate for two whole years.

So the Democrats could set up their future "chess play" just to lose the 2024 election :mjlol:

And Biden could literally send over a million pounds of bombs to lsreal so they could kill 500,000 innocent women and children:dead:

But couldn't use his senile presidental powers to protect abortion rights.

meh dems are exaggerating for political reasons
The treatment for sepsis isn't abortion
it was a misdiagnosis
Another scumbag. The sepsis was brought on by the dying fetus which needed to be aborted. She was miscarrying and they didn’t want to treat her because it “had a heart beat”

ProPublica condensed more than 800 pages of Crain's medical records into a four-page timeline in consultation with two maternal-fetal medicine specialists; reporters reviewed it with nine doctors, including researchers at prestigious universities, OB-GYNs who regularly handle miscarriages, and experts in emergency medicine and maternal health.

Some said the first ER missed warning signs of infection that deserved attention. All said that the doctor at the second hospital should never have sent Crain home when her signs of sepsis hadn't improved. And when she returned for the third time, all said there was no medical reason to make her wait for two ultrasounds before taking aggressive action to save her.

"This is how these restrictions kill women," said Dr. Dara Kass, a former regional director at the Department of Health and Human Services and an emergency room physician in New York. "It is never just one decision, it's never just one doctor, it's never just one nurse."

sigh - do you seriously think doctors automatically abort when a pregnant woman has sepsis
they do additional ultrasounds to check the condition of the baby in states where abortion is legal too

Let’s try again since you can’t read

No I don’t think doctors automatically abort when a woman has sepsis. In this instance the concern over the fetus outweighed the concern over the mother when everything
pointed to a miscarriage occurring.

Another tragic death that could have been prevented. This just shows how dangerous these backwards, restrictive abortion laws have become. How in the heck can people justify trying to deflect from what's happening in Texas and in other states with these backwards policies? Like, come on. Hospitals are now being put in a position where they're too scared to provide life-saving care simply because of the threat of a lawsuit. That is a fukking crazy and scary chilling effect. And yeah, these cases might not be the majority, but any preventable death because of legal confusion should be treated like the tragedy it is, and shouted out from the roof-tops.

Dude I was telling my girlfriend about this and she got upset. Abortion is one of those issues that Democrats use to gain power. They can keep making it an issue ever election cycle to garner support. They only want to *fix* it so much.

Obama was 1 - 2 months into his first term and decided that abortion was "not a top priority issue".

Democrats care but they care more about maintaining power and if they can dangle the carrot in front of women to keep then in then it's all good.

BTW this story is sad. Being a Texan we need better healthcare systems to help young women like this. Democrats want to jump to abortion = healthcare. Not really.

We need better healthcare systems overall from beginning to term. Also most abortion aren't these outlier issues and I despise them for framing them as such because it's so intellectually dishonest and it redirects away from the real issue of HEALTHCARE being bad in our country.

I'm pro-choice BTW because I don't think we should tell people what to do but I'm not really *for* abortion as a form of "healthcare" if that makes sense.
