Mainstream news doesn't have the resources to travel to each state to analyze the situation. As you see, MSNBC and CNN have to keep ppl in new york or dc because funds are tight - or they skype them in. Fighting voter suppression is also a lot harder due to the evisceration of local news outlets.
Think of how many times you've watched CNN and seen a panel of local experts or activists. Everyone is a "national" correspondent.
