That just means she is one grade behind, There are many reasons a kid can be a grade behind. My brother had a illness when he was younger that caused him to miss 2nd grade.

Almost everyone starts high school at 14 or 15, she's either one (1) grade behind, or she started school at five turning six, which some parents due to help with school adjustment.

That being said, the circumstances of the abuse indicate her parents were disinterested in her.
