Julio Cesar Martinez To Fight In Co-Feature Of Canelo-Smith Card 12/19
By Manouk Akopyan

Published On Sat Nov 21, 2020, 06:35 PM EST

Trainer of the year Eddy Reynoso will have another busy night pulling off double duty on Dec. 19.

BoxingScene.com has been informed by a source with direct knowledge of the negotiations that WBC flyweight champion Julio Cesar Martinez will serve as the co-feature in the Canelo Alvarez versus Callum Smith card next month on DAZN from the Alamodome in San Antonio, once an opponent is determined and finalized.

The match will mark Martinez’s first return to the ring since the pandemic started. The all-action Martinez (17-1, 13 KOs) was supposed to fight as the main event in Matchroom Boxing’s first show since COVID-19 stalled the sport in August against McWilliams Arroyo but a Martinez throat infection forced a cancellation.

The fast-rising 25-year-old champion will now fight in a chief support role to his stablemate and fellow Mexican countryman Alvarez in what will definitely be in front of a larger audience.

Now that Alvarez is an unrestricted free agent guiding his own career, stablemates who are also trained by Reynoso will have more of a likelihood of fighting alongside their star teammate no matter the promoter or platform.

Reynoso’s cadre of budding boxers include heavyweight contenders Andy Ruiz, Frank Sanchez and WBC super bantamweight titlist Luis Nery, who all fight under the PBC banner on FOX and Showtime.

Oscar Valdez is also trained by the son of Don Chepo and is promoted by Top Rank and fights on ESPN, while Martinez is tied with Matchroom and fights on DAZN.

Ryan Garcia, who fought as the co-feature to Alvarez’s knockout win over Sergey Kovalev last year with a KO of his own over Romero Duno, is likely the odd man out of the co-feature equation for the foreseeable since he’s signed with Golden Boy, the promoter of which Alvarez freed himself from shortly after filing a lawsuit.

And that makes this a cakewalk?

Agree. Ryder was unlucky, but doesn't mean Smith isn't top caliber.

All fighters struggle with certain skill sets/styles of others, Teo Lopez had the same thing against Nakatani, didn't seem to be any issue against Lomachenko.

That being said this is Canelo, seriously, upper echelon. Definition of a prize fighter.

Julio Cesar Martinez vs. Francisco Rodriguez Set For Canelo-Callum Smith Bill
By Jake Donovan
Published On Wed Dec 2, 2020, 07:22 AM EST

Julio Cesar Martinez is ready for his place on one of the biggest cards of the year.

The squat knockout artist from Mexico City is set to make the third defense of his flyweight title, which will take place December 19 with fans in attendance at The Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Martinez is in advanced talks to face countryman Francisco ‘Chihuas’ Rodriguez, with the bout considered a done deal barring minor details.

Headlining the show—which will stream live on DAZN-USA—Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (53-1-2, 36KOs) will take on reigning super middleweight titlist Callum Smith (27-0, 19KOs) of Liverpool, England.

Alvarez and Martinez are both trained by Eddy Reynoso.

Martinez has managed to maintain an active pace even in spite of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The 25-year old from Mexico City claimed a flyweight belt in a 9th round knockout of former champ Cristofer Rosales last December in Phoenix, Arizona. The upcoming clash versus Rodriguez (33-4-1. 24KOs) will mark his fourth fight in a span of 52 weeks dating back to that title winning effort.

Wedged in between are a pair of title defenses which didn’t disappoint in action. Martinez turned away a determined challenge from unbeaten Jay Harris to outpoint the Welshman this past February in Frisco, Texas, in one of the final cards before the pandemic.

Most recently, Martinez pummeled countryman and late replacement Moises Calleros en route to a 2nd round knockout this past October in his Mexico City hometown.

Rodriguez enters riding a 14-fight win streak, most of which has been a level below his strawweight title run. The 27-year old from Monterrey reigned in boxing’s smallest weight division in 2014, a title reign which was preceded by a knockout loss to Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez, then an unbeaten two-division titlist whom was testing the flyweight waters.

Rodriguez eventually outgrew the strawweight division, though not before his August 2014 war with Japan’s Katsunari Takayama. Their 12-round slugfest was hailed by BoxingScene.com as the 2014 Fight of the Year.

A move up in weight initially provided disastrous result, having been held to a draw versus journeyman Jomar Fajardo (before beating him in a rematch) and dropping back decisions to then-junior flyweight titlist Donnie Nietes and countryman Moises Fuentes in 2015.

Rodriguez has since settled in at flyweight, having not lost in five years entering his bid to become a two-division titlist.
