BET is currently working on a reboot of 106 & Park, the popular music video countdown series that once stood as a cornerstone of the network’s programming throughout the ’00s.

During an appearance on The Breakfast Club morning show, BET President and CEO Scott Mills touched on the show’s enduring legacy and the network’s plans to bring back 106 & Park, albeit packaged for the online and digital age.

“We understand people love 106 & Park,” Mills, who was appointed President of BET in 2017 before assuming CEO duties in 2021, said while speaking of a potential revival.

“The fact that it doesn’t work as a linear television show doesn’t mean it’s over,” he added. “We can bring 106 & Park back as a podcast. We can bring back 106 & Park back as a digital experience.”

According to Mills, a revamped version of 106 & Park is expected to be unveiled sometime this year and will likely coincide with BET’s celebration of the 25-year anniversary of the show’s launch back in 2000.

“We are evolving what 106 & Park will look like in 2025 because it does have that very important role,” he explained. “We’ve got a number of really exciting executions. We’re approaching the 25th anniversary of 106 & Park as well, so there’ll be some things that y’all will really be excited about.”

Debuting on Sept. 11, 2000, 106 & Park remained on-air until 2014 and ran for a total of 3,710 episodes. R&B star Chloe Bailey, who was a guest host on The Breakfast Club during Mills’ visit, touched on 106 & Park‘s impact and influence.

“For me, I grew up loving 106 & Park,” Bailey said of the landmark show. “I think I can speak for everyone of my generation, that was the show for me to be inspired, to get excited, that was it.

“I’d run home from school and that’s what I would put on. So I was used to seeing people who looked like me, who were succeeding in a field that I wanted to succeed in one day. So BET has always had a special place in my heart.”

It basically was a podcast, just in front of a live studio audience and of course the booth. There's no reason they can't get 2 hosts and do exactly what they did then interviewing rappers, play the new song, maybe a freestyle and then field questions from Twitter or IG. It would really work better today than it did back then format wise but would probably get lost in the sauce because radio shows have already been using this format and offering exclusive interviews or require a subscription (Spotify or whatever) this is basically gonna be 106 in name only.

They could air the episodes on bet but will probably be on bet+. I doubt they'll upload the interviews to YouTube or for free.

That being said, I don't expect it to last.

It will fail just like TRL did unless you make it rare and special. It was on well into the social media era and no one cared.

How about bring something back that is useful

Like Teen Summit.. help with these crazy, smoked out teens going through mental health issues and not having a stable home

Bring back BET nightly news and discuss and investigate what’s going on in the communities across the states and the Caribbean and Africa..

I think they've tried to bring back BET news. Not sure what happened with it though.

Yeah I don’t see what they can do differently than TRL did to prevent themselves from flopping.

Even going the podcast route would be no differently than a lot of other podcasts out here.
