When HBO's heralded series "The Wire" went off the air 10 years ago, it wasn't immediately clear that it would be a launching pad for much of the ensemble.

Sure, the show had been hailed as one of, if not the, greatest television drama ever and it launched series regulars Idris Elba (Russell "Stringer" Bell) and, less directly, Michael B. Jordan (Wallace) to stardom while making names for other cast members including Dominic West (Jimmy McNulty), Michael K. Williams (Omar Little), Wendell Pierce (William "Bunk" Moreland) and Clarke Peters (Lester Freamon).

10 years after 'The Wire,' cast members reflect on their careers after the classic series

In one stroke, Michael B. Jordan has surpassed everyone from that cast.

That would be correct. Both of their deaths had long lasting repercussions to the story as well.
Wallace was a supporting character on The Wire. Ned was a false protagonist for the beginning of GoT. Neither of those are main characters. The main character or characters are basically the protagonists. You're suggesting that if someone has any relevancy to the plot that boost them to main character status. It doesn't. A supporting character can have plot relevance but the main character(s) are who the whole story revolves around.

Main characters of The Wire are people like Daniels, McNulty, Kima not Wallace. If you want an actual example of a supporting character that became a main character see Steve Urkel.

So are you saying the plot didn't revolve around ned stark?
Or weather or not Wallace was going to snitch?

And no a main character does not have to be the protagonist.
In justified byod was an anatigonst and was a main character.

You're right in that the main character doesn't have to be the protagonist but in 90% of cases it is. Even when it isn't a main character is central to the entire plot not a subplot or a small section of the plot.

You're saying characters who were killed off very early in the narrative to have their death serve as motivation for main characters and protagonists or even antagonists are themselves main characters. Nah. Ned Stark is the main character of season 1 of Game of Thrones if you consider the entire show he's not the main character as the show is 8 seasons long. Wallace isn't a main character period in The Wire. He's a supporting character that was killed off.

You sound like the type to say Obi Wan was a main character in Star Wars: A New Hope.
