Long story short, Francis did his background research with his contract coming up and saw those 600k title shots as the joke they were, and re-signing would have locked him in a champs clause that re-upped with each win. AKA, fukked for life at 36.

Dana, used to getting his way and punking dudes, got mad dude wouldn't re-sign and intentionally put him in a title fight with Gane with his fukked up knee hoping he took an L, which would force him back to the end of the title line, diminish his value and make him a gatekeeper and cut him.

Instead, he won, sat out a year for his contract to expire, let his knee heal and the rest is history.

I wouldn't put it passed him. Remember, no one talked about Dana White slapping his wife. Dana hates to lose plus he's a narcissist and man-child. Terrible combination, but somehow he fooled the Ferttitas 20 years ago and has been set for life since then. Piss him off and you get punished by an emotional boss.
