What a great fight this was. Gvozdyk fought a great fight and was arguably winning up after the first 8 rounds. To me it seemed like a matter of time though. He just didn't have the fire power to keep Beterbiev off of him. That last 2 rounds were a beating and I think Gvozdyk should take some time off after that

Beterbiev? Wasn't he dropped prior to last night's fight?
He was by a slugger in Johnson but he took some of Gvozdyk's best shots on Saturday without getting discouraged. Bivol who most see as his most formidable future opponent also operates with those 1-2 combos mostly like Gvozdyk but with less power (maybe more speed though) and he doesn't like exchanges not even as much as Gvozdyk. Can't fight on the inside either and physically not a very strong 175er, he could make 168 too...
Zurdo is a pressure fighter without too much power, he gets slaughtered by Beterbiev.
Browne is chinny as hell, Beterbiev beats him too.
Kovalev put together a nice spell this year but clearly past his best and vulnerable to the body, he most likely gets taken out too except if he ca catch Beterbiev with something big in the first few rounds.

Beterbiev surprised the hell outta me :leon: From the few fights I watched of him I thought he was just a relentless brawler but man can actually box :dwillhuh: Dude was doing pull counters, countering over Gvozdyc's jab, mixing up downstairs and upstairs with both accuracy, diversity and power. Didn't think he was able to do this. Plus, he's just strong. Gvozdyck started well but quickly it was obvious that Beterbiev was superior and he was breaking him down. I think Bivol is better and stronger than Gvozdyck so hopefully it's another great matchup.

How do you guys think Ward would have fared against Beterbiev ? He bullied Kovalev on the inside and it looks like Beterbiev would have gladly accepted the phonebooth challenge. :patrice:

from what i saw backstage and the fact he stayed longer than 24 hours in the hospital..i dont think its a good idea for gvozdyk to fight a ramirez in his next fight

Zurdo punches a lot lighter than Beterbiev though and in general not as big and not as good

You might be right though in a sense that he shouldn't just jump straight back into a tough fight

Bivol MIGHT be better Im not sure but Im pretty sure he isn't stronger than Gvozdyk. He is a small 175er who could make 168 and avoids any kind of physical dog fights. His punching power is also weaker than Gvozdyk's imo. At this point I don't see what he could offer to Beterbiev what Gvozdyk couldn't.

As for Ward vs Beterbiev I can't pick... it would be foolish for Ward to try to outfighf Beterbiev on the inside, dude's a bug 175er, strong as an ox and gets wild and dirty on the inside. Ward would have to take the outboxing approach like he did against Abraham or Rodriguez, question if it would be enough or not... :patrice:

I saw some fanboy opinions on the internet from both sides one saying easy work for this, one say easy work for that. Thats foolish, it's a close ass fight on paper

Another Gold Medal
Ward would have out pointed him from the outside. I dont think he fights this guy on the inside all 12, wouldnt be smart, maybe gets a knockdown early from something down the middle as well. Not going to say easy work but yeah I think he would have gotten the W.

Beterbiev-Gvozdyk Averages 635,000 Viewers On ESPN
By Jake Donovan

Published On Mon Oct 21, 2019, 06:07 PM EDT

As shown once again on Friday night, Artur Beterbiev’s stiffest competition continues to come in the form of opposing broadcasts.

The unbeaten light heavyweight extended his perfect knockout-to-win run on Friday, the latest effort coming at the highest level as he claimed the World (lineal) light heavyweight championship with a 10th round stoppage of Oleksandr Gvozdyk (17-1, 14KOs). The battle of unbeaten light heavyweight title claimants headlined a live ESPN telecast, which drew an average of 635,000 viewers according to Nielsen Media Research.

Portions of the 114-minute live telecast ran head-to-head with the back end of FS1’s live coverage and post-game wrap of Game 5 of the Major League Baseball American League championship series between the Houston Astros and the New York Yankees, which topped the sports night with more than 5.6 million viewers watching the Yankees extend the series one more night.

Also not at all helping the broadcast was the delayed start time on ESPN’s linear network. The show was due to begin at 10:00pm ET, but had to spill over to sister outlet ESPNews due to live coverage of a college football game between Pittsburgh and Syracuse running long.

As a result, the evening’s chief support—which saw Kudratillo Abdukakhorov (17-0, 9KOs) post a technical decision win over former welterweight titlist Luis Collazo to preserve his own place in line for a shot at a 147-pound title—was carried on sister outlet ESPNews for the first six rounds before picking back up on ESPN in round seven.

The entirety of the main event aired in full on ESPN, though failing to gain traction despite the high profile matchup and the competitive nature of the championship bout itself.

If there are ratings wins to be found for Top Rank and ESPN, it’s in the show boasting a 35% increase from the network’s previous live showing on Aug. 17, which posted a near-series low average of 471,000 viewers. It’s also a 32% improvement from the last ESPN show headlined by Beterbiev (15-0, 15KOs), as the two-time Olympian from Russia—who now lives and trains in Montreal, Canada—topped a May 4 card which averaged 480,000 live in primetime, while also going head to head with the NBA Playoffs and the DAZN-streamed middleweight championship bout between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Daniel Jacobs.

The first career loss for the 32-year old Gvozdyk saw a slight decline from his previous network appearance. The 2012 Olympic Bronze medalist from Ukraine drew an average of 655,000 viewers for a March 31 ESPN main event where he scored a 5th round injury stoppage of Doudou Ngumbu for the lone successful defense of his light heavyweight crown.

Friday’s viewership fell just short of network’s average of 647,500 viewers per boxing telecast in 12 previous shows in 2019. The platform has made a strong push to air much of its content on ESPN+, including a show this coming Saturday in Reno, Nevada. The series returns to ESPN prime on Nov. 2, as Miguel Berchelt defends his 130-pound belt versus former titlist Jason Sosa live from Carson, California.
