Parents Daniel Wilander and Chelsea Cirino put Marley in a playpen in an upstairs room while they celebrated downstairs, according to a statement from Joliet police.
During the night, two pitbull crosses managed to escape from the basement of the home.
About 1.30 am local time on July 5, the homeowner heard noises upstairs and discovered one of the dogs mauling the child.
The pit bull’s owner went upstairs after hearing a noise and walked in on the animal savaging Marley. He fought to pull the animal off the toddler, managed to do so, and dialed 911, according to Fox2.

Whilst the homeowner managed to prise the dog off the child, she was left with numerous bite marks, police said.
The little girl was taken to St Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, but died approximately two hours later.
“Marley was the most beautiful little girl,” a statement on a GoFundMe page reads.
“From the start, this perfect little girl constantly filled the room and hearts of whoever she came into contact with.

The dog that killed Marley was seized by police, and is currently in quarantine. It is likely to be euthanized, with police continuing to investigate her death.
A Facebook page believed to belong to the man who owned the house where Marley was killed includes pictures of two pit bull type dogs, although it is unclear if either of those was the pet that attacked her

Parks and Wildlife manager Jewell Crossberg, who photographed posing with a firearm alongside dead big game animals in Africa, has been removed from his position as acting Esperance district manager.

“Marley loved swimming, fishing, her parents, her toys and her friends.
“The amount of hurt will not change.”

The dog that fatally mauled the little girl was turned over to the Joliet Township Animal Control, police confirmed.
A neighbour, Carl Bell, told Chicago news outlet WGN9 that the party had gone on all night.
“It was going on three-four hours nonstop dark to almost midnight,” he said.

“A lot of dogs get out around here, it’s outside, inside someone’s house it’s their responsibility to take care of their dogs.”
Another neighbour, Mike Minor, said he was shocked to learn what had happened.
