Is this supposed to be the most anti-gimmick gimmick ever?

He used to be Cody Deaner's "cousin", but then they started beefing so Jake dropped the Deaner last name. They started calling him Jake Something, and it just stuck.

He was teaming with his storyline cousin Cody Deaner. He was known as cousin Jake. Their team was The Deaners so he became Jake Deaner logically... they broke up and he changed his name to Jake Something. His cousin went on to join Eric Youngs cult at the time
