She obviously looks tired in the picture on the left. You can't use pictures of someone when they are tired and try to use it as an argument about their attractiveness. Everyone looks like s*** when they are tired.
That said, I think Aaliyah was pretty but she was also very average looking. Almost slightly above average even. I think what won people over was her music, humble personality and girl next door attitude and charm. Her image was of a sweet, slightly tomboyish, laid back woman, which a lot of people really liked at the time.
