Honestly, Boyz II Men had great voices as a collective and a killer four part harmony, but individually their voices wasnt saying sh1t. Maybe Wanya had a little something, but he wasn't a vocal powerhouse frontman like Johnny Gill (New Edition), Lil G (Silk), Stokley (Mint Condition), K-Ci (Jodeci), or even Sisqo (Dru Hill). To me, Wanya was a bit above avg in overall vocal ability.

I just seen these Boyz II Men n1ggas struggling to sing in a damn Old Navy commercial the other day. :snoop:

I may have like Jodeci more because they appeal more to the music that I listen to, but that still doesn't make them a better group.

I'm sure when it's all said and done, 20+ years from now, Boyz II Men will be put before Jodeci in terms of R&B groups. Boyz II Men will always be compared with New Edition, while Jodeci will be put as the best R&B group when in the same category that includes groups such as Hi-Five, Silk, Blackstreet, Shai, Dru Hill, Into, etc.

"End of The Road" is bigger than any song in Jodeci's catalog by far

How you gonna put Jodeci in the same group as Hi-Five and Shai? Shai was done after the first album and they tried to come on that Boyz II men vibe and fizzled out quickly.... and Hi-Five was more of a teen group similar to Soul For Real, and to an extent Another Bad Creation. Intro was really good, but they were semi-done by the 2nd album. Their first album was a classic and they could really make music, but they werent on that tier of R&B groups.

And I would take New edition over Boyz II Men anyday.

Did any of these groups have better than an average up-tempo game? Only ones I can really think of are MotownPhilly and Come and Talk to me but I wasn't the hugest R&B head back then but I did fukk with all of these groups relatively tough.

I'll prolly roll with Jodeci on this one but I always go back and forth between them and Boyz. Dino was incredibly underrated as a talent though. He shoulda went solo as soon as they fell off. Ginuwine came and took the lane that coulda been his and it was a wrap.

h-town had bangers on their first album. boyz II men was on biv 10 at first, so that's all that needs to be said on their behalf

honestly, I don't remember silk having many of those. but I got writer's block right now so i'll give them the benefit for now.

im not sure about "come and talk to me" being an uptempo.

I don't think H-Town belongs in this comparison. Their on a lower tier than the others.

why not?

Jodeci would be considered the best of the urban R&B groups, but Boyz II Men is much bigger than that, which is why they would go down in history as the better group.

It's like comparing Alicia Keys to Beyonce. Alicia Keys will most likely go down as the better artist because she is much bigger than the demographic that Beyonce appeals to, even though more people "that we know" probably like Beyonce's music more.

I have more Jodeci songs in my playlist than Boyz II Men by far, but that's my preference because I like Jodeci more. But I still think Boyz II Men will be viewed as the better group when it's all said and done.

Jodeci is viewed as a more urban R&B group... provided the blueprint for groups like Jagged Edge, and all of those other copycat groups. Jodeci is the leader of the pack by far, but I think they'll always be grouped with those type of groups because they are the pioneers in a sense.

And yes I agree, New Edition >>>>>>>> Boyz II Men

They were cool (and I know you a big fan of them and Silk, from the SOHH days), but not on the same level as the other 3 groups mentioned in terms of quality music, versatility, hits, vocals, appeal, impact, influence etc. in the 90's. After 'Beggin' After Dark', they wasnt really saying much.

That's just me though...

I do agree I think Come & Talk To Me, was slightly more midtempo, than uptempo for its time. It dropped in 1992, and other 1992 hit R&B songs that were out like Mary's Real Love, TLC's What About Your Friends, Bobby's Humpin' Around, R. Kelly's She Got That Vibe, Wreckx-N-Effect's Rump Shaker, etc. were "more" uptempo to the ears, than Come & Talk To Me.

You can still do a nice old school two step, clap and a spin though to Come and Talk To Me. lol.

There were so many amazing groups out in the 90s, it really depends on your taste in music. When its all said and done, i think boyz ii men is the most remembered due to their popularity. Jodeci and Guy all day.

Yeah of course they will because Boyz II Men had that crossover music, appeal and success that Jodeci never had. The less raunchy Jodeci songs ("Lately" remake and "Come & Talk to Me") were their biggest hits on pop charts. Where as Boyz II Men's songs, were all big hits because they played it safe all the time. Clean cut image, suit and ties, clean lyrics, and great classic R&B but pop felt, production. Not to mention, they had the biggest producers and writers in the game at the time, huge record label (Motown) all helping them along the way. Thats what separates them from Jodeci the most. Just like MJ having Quincy, and later Teddy Riley for the Dangerous album....Janet Having Jam and Lewis throughout, Whitney had Babyface, etc. many big name artists that had big writers and producers will always get much more recognition and stand out more than their counterparts who did not.

Jodeci did set the blueprint for that "sex" music. After them, you had R. Kelly, H-Town, Silk etc. all stepping on the scene, and later Ginuwine (who was Devantes protege), Jagged Edge, Jaheim, Next, Dru Hill etc. all showing who they got their influence, and style, and wardrobe from.

But I agree, Boyz II Men will be the best in the pop-r&b audience world, but to the strictly urban crowd it's Jodeci hands down. :takedat:

I have both their discographies in my music collection and listen to both, but listen to Jodeci's much more often.
