So why are we pretending that watching Empire and Scandal are a bad thing?

Mary J. a life was crucified for singing about chicken in a Burger King commercial. Yet white people can sing about whatever food they want and it's ALL GOOD.

Eat that chicken, but don't let whitey see you eating it!

Exclusively negative images of black folks? Luscious is JR. Ewing from Dallas. Why is it that as black people we have to be so much more careful about the roles we play on tv but whites can do whatever the fukk they want and not be labeled a stereotype??

Are there even any negative stereotypes for white people? I can't imagine a character that could be created for tv where might people would be like "oh that character is caters to stereotypes of white people".

I think we may have gotten to a point where we are being too hard on ourselves.

The man with the most powerful job on the planet is black. If you choose to believe more in imaginary characters on tv, maybe the problem is with the viewer.
There are an infinite number of white shows and white folks have an infinite number of rolls they play. They are not consistently depicted as any one type.

Black shows are consistently about negativity (outside of a few comedic shows). It's not that Black actors have to be careful. It's that the media is not interested in potrayin' us any other way. Those images are one of the things effectin' the psyche of Black folks.

The problem is the system & viewer. Folks in this thread praisin' Lucious & Cookie. There are many young women that learn what's cool from reality shows. There are many young men that learn what's cool from music. They adopt the attitudes, the language, etc. Most of it is negative.

It ain't about other races. We're talkin' Black folks. Our situation is different.

And it's not about righteous. It's about diversity. White shows have heroes, villians, etc. Black shows have villians & sassy women.

Grey's Anatomy, Agents of SHIED, Once Upon a Time, Arrow, Supernatural... I don't watch much TV outside of football & an occasional Law & Order rerun, so...

:beli:Look at this keyboard militant brehs. So you don't support the few shows with black folk who are #blackexcellence?

I said this before but there was this show on NBC (major network) about black married couple who were spies. Both good looking, #blackexcellence, no stereotypes and nobody watch that shyt. It kept being moved and finally cancelled.

So take your keyboard outrage somewhere else. :camby:

You asked for shows and I named them. But instead of continuin' the dialogue, you name call & post some smilies. Pretty deep.

Outrage though? Another over imaginative Lucious wanna be.

The show is nothin' but negative images of Black folks so I don't support it. Didn't tell anyone not to watch. Didn't start any movements. But I'm an outraged keyboard militant? Either you need a dictionary or have nothing productive to add.

Oh, some cancelled show that you can't even remember the name of. Let me help you out. Maybe you could recommend some existing Black dramas with positive characters. I'll wait.

Let's be real. There are a lot of different roles blacks are playing on tv as well. Those don't garner attention though. Those like Empire garner attention. Although they may be flawed, as characters should be, the roles played by blacks on Scandal, Being Mary Jane, Blackish, etc are overall positive roles. They even have rappers playing cops (LL Cool J, Ice-T). Even though Luscious may be a nut, he went from nothing to the owner of a multi million dollar company. The American Fukkin Dream.

I think the problem is, due to Americas abominable history of how it has treated people of color, when we see a black person in a negative role, we actually see 10. And we see the flaws over everything else. I know people like Dr. Boyce Watkins mean well, but often I think they are finding problems where there aren't any.

I'm not talkin' about roles. I'm talkin' about Black shows, which is why I didn't really focus on Scandal.

But I don't consider Kerry Washington's role on Scandal positive.

I've watched a few episodes of Blackish. It's cool. Not all that funny. But it's a comedy. Not really what I'm talkin' about. There's always 1 or 2 of those.

I've watched Being Mary Jane on rare occasions. Gabrielle Union's character is borderline. Very stereo typical professional Black woman that can't find a man. She's more desparate than foul... flawed. But I'll take this as a decent Black show. Character diversity. And seems more about her tryin' to find her way.

And I'm not talkin' successful, which is what I think y'all are focusin' on. Lucious owns a multi-million dollar company, but he's foul. Beyond simply bein' flawed. He's a murderer amongs other things.

I don't magnify negative roles by 10. Outside of Black comedies, that seems to be all we get. Being Mary Jane (borderline) vs how many reality shows and dramas based on foulness.

Beyond the scope of this thread, but it's the same with music, the news... Black images in general. It's a problem that is obviously workin' on the psyche of Black folks as well as other races.

I'm not familiar with Dr. Watkins' stance on these shows.

:usure:People are really upset that a prime time television show has characters with flaws? If there wasn't any conflict, it'd be a boring ass show.

I'm not ashamed to say that I have yet to view a single episode from either program.

Same for me. Politics aside, it just doesn't interest me.
