@Preacher why don't you start working at colleges, that way you have more leeway in what you can say.
As an educator, I can see you using humor to connect with the kids, assuming they will not garner you respect from the instant you walk in that classroom. While that builds community and common ground (based on the notion that a black person can't be trusted just off of title alone), it sets up a dynamic. I save my fun jokes and stuff for black classrooms. As the dispenser of knowledge out there, you should be strictly about business; every interaction is meaningful, and instead of responding quickly, Im trying to create dialogue amongst themselves (peer education), while working to remember their names in 10 minutes so they can at least feel validated.
I can teach in a middle school setting, but I don't like teaching them, I prefer college level. Because I dictate my curriculum. If you're gonna work public schools, you gotta play their rules.
