now that i know what it is i can say that it's stupid

holidays are pointless and usually meaningless, or have had their meanings distorted to the point of absurdity over the years; they're merely consumer checkpoints throughout the year...the fact that black folks feel the need to invent their own stupid holidays to fit in and feel some type of solidarity is pretty sad

but whatever floats your boat...if you wanna celebrate the date texas slaves got freed, do you :manny:

You fam and all, but this post doesn't make any sense...it ain't about making up a holiday..its about celebrating a powerful part of our history; it has nothing to do with consumer culture or the capitalist culture of gifts and shyt; its about remembering when we finally took legal ownership over our own freedom and took one step closer to ending oppression; true, oppression continued and transformed into another monstrosity in industrial capitalism and Jim Crow/Apartheid, but our people used Juneteenth to spirngboard initiatives to gain political power and build OUR OWN institutions of education and worship; That's what Juneteenth is about: remembering our agency in building this country as a PEOPLE, not as individuals.

I don't really do anything special for it but that's every holiday for me.

If blacks had a stronger sense of community it would probably be a big deal but as things stand we can't even buy products from one another (Outside of haircuts).

We been free & we have come a long way. But still to this day, we aren't appreciated and we as a whole cannot seem to unite as one. This woulda been a great day to go to the DuSable Museum.

Our company holds a job fair every year at the Juneteenth celebration here. I haven't heard anything about it this year. I'm not black but I go out with my boss(he's black) and help out. Aside from doing something good in the community It's a chance to eat some good food especially the bbq.

Hell I'm in Fresno. Where's this at?

Juneteenth has been celebrated in Texas for well over 100 years.

Juneteenth celebration in Jacksonville FL

On May 20, 1865, in Tallahassee, General Edward McCook announced to Florida slaves that they had been free since 1863. On the same day – as promised – Union troops fired 250 volleys in Jacksonville to let slaves know that the Emancipation Proclamation was real and in effect.

Up north where I have family, they have the Juneteenth festival thingy every summer

Its the absolute worse thing ever, every year someone gets shot or there's some crazy fight. The food is all cool, and what they're trying to do is cool but the amount of bullshyt there is ridiculous, I think they beefed up the police presence, so the past few years there hasnt been as many problems, but there's no reason a festival like that with that kind of meaning should even need that kind of police presence.

Half the people there don't even know what that shyt is about
