You work hard AND you work smart. It's like mining for precious minerals. Do you just plow wherever you think is right and hope for the best? Or, do you find out exactly where you need to mine, gather the necessary tools, and dig with the correct amount of effort and technique?
I'd say your Uncle was very successful. Maybe he didn't have his corner store becoming a huge franchise like Wal-Mart, but if he had a decent income coming in and people loved the service he provided, then he won. He may not have even went into the business to become wealthy, maybe he was more concerned about wanting to serve his community with quality products while working earnestly in good conscience. I can't say, since I never met the man. But did you ever ask your uncle what he felt? If you hadn't, you might be surprised what he might've told you. It's cliche, but sometimes, it's not about the money to some people. It's about making a difference and making other people's day easier. That's its own reward.
Yeah, some people can work hard and never end up anywhere. I'm not disagreeing with you at all. It does happen, and quite a lot. My point is, success is a benchmark that only that person can really make for themselves. To label someone's efforts as unsuccessful, you'd have to know what their definitions of success were. For all we know, some of the people we think are unsuccessful are actually right where they want to be. So you never know. Can't always rely on what you see alone, cause it could very well be deeper than the surface will show you.
