Everyone told me the same thing (especially being a foreigner). Difference is, when I got home all my parents and family could talk about was how much better we were than any other humans on earth.
I'm not saying you gotta go all the way hyperbolic, but you have to offer some strong positive reinforcement at home.

I can't lie. We had video vixens that we lusted after when I was in middle school(2001-2004). But we didn't have the Internet at our finger tips, and we had more realistic ideas of what we found attracive. IG and the smartphone era changed the game. The IG model light-skinned factory is in full force. I could see why a young black girls could develop critical self esteem when Lira Galore is the standard. Seems like age old colorism could be the root to me.

And if we were talking about grown women, then I'd agree, but a young girl in middle school having depression or low self esteem isn't something I would automatically say is their own fault.
I've worked with ppl with depression, PTSD, etc before, and they usually are that way for a reason. Sometimes it's from rape, abuse, abandonment, etc. My sister went through a deep depression when my dad died. This place hates black women but didn't know y'all hated black girls too.
