From 2010:
I’m a pretentious hippie,” he told me on more than one occasion. “This is what I should be doing. … Regardless of how I got here, I’m exactly where I want to be.” Mr. Dash said that in his days of Rocawear, Cristal and yachts, he was “compromising my brand—Ralph Lauren, that’s what I wanted to be.”

The way Dame wasn't accepted into the movie business, art, or fashion, has him acting this way. He's mad whites don't love him, and he doesn't get why.
If your whole thing is that you're a hustler and nothing else then why should I buy a product that you represent? At least with Rocawear, it was tied to the image that Rocafella tried to project as a label and a collective. Ain't no real CEOs rockin CEO on their downtime. Does Dame even have a favorite artist or a favorite school of art or a favorite medium? If not then why would I buy art from him?

I liked Paid In Full :manny:

From '05
Claims to steal Weinstein’s lady-friend at Cannes.
Even if Harvey Weinstein produced Gangs of New York, he’s not exactly a gangsta. But that doesn’t mean Damon Dash won’t treat him that way. In the new issue of the highly street-credible magazine Don Diva (tagline: “Parental Advisory: Gangsta Content”), Dash, Jay-Z’s former partner in Roc- A-Fella Records, who made Paid in Full with Dimension Films (run by Harvey’s brother Bob), talks about inflicting street justice when the brothers wouldn’t give him a meeting. He began hunting Harvey. “I saw him in Cannes and I snatched his bytch— he had a girl and I knew her, so I said ‘Give me her.’ He was pissed,” Dash says. While admitting that Harvey’s a “guy that everyone was afraid of” . . . “I was like, ‘He’s a bytch.’ ” Apparently, as a result, Bob wouldn’t meet with him—unless his pal Russell Simmons was present. “I respect Russell,” Dash says, “but if I was going to do something, he’s not going to stop me.” When asked about it, Harvey refused to reheat the beef. “Damon’s a first-class talent, and I thoroughly enjoy our good-natured trash-talking,” he said through his publicist.

Disrespect Hollywood heavyweights at the biggest film festival in the world, and then wonder why you're not a player in the business.

I wish things would've worked out with Dame and Spitta. Looked like he was making a real come back. Now he seems unhinged again.

360 deals was a way for labels to stay in existence :what:

Technology = internet & cheaper to record lead to more artists, less media control, less CD sales, more risk, less money being made. They would probably do it earlier, but they couldn't cause someone would've offered the artist a better deal. You want a better deal, you need some leverage to offset the risk of you flopping. It's extremely simple.

Artists were living too good, in a competitive market these artists will get what they are worth.
Here is the thing though, artists are using labels to gain momentum, guidance, fame, budgets and their cd's are flopping but they are making money through tours and other venues due to the investments made by the label.

360 is not bad, it's bad compared to what people were getting in the 90s but the 90s had a completely different market structure.

And why are you making this about race and shyt? Everyone is getting treated the same, everyone is getting 360, execs maximize profit since they work for publicly owned companies.
They don't have any other responsibility than to maximize profit, legally.

dude...either your a paid pawn lobbying.for the MAJOR LABELS?

or your a Right Wing Republican who dikkrides BIG BUSINEAS?

Which one are u? :shaq2:

Cause i cant see any rational human being much less artist or fan SUPPORTING THE IDEAL OF A 360 contract

hell u talm bout artists are doing good..cause it allows the lable.to make larger investments in them

WHAT GOOD.IS THAT WHEN THE ARTIST HAS NO EQUITY AS WELL AS LEVERAGE cause he has to SELL ALL HIS RIGHTS for some measly advance!!! :mindblown:

And im from EXPRIENCE!!! ....I dont know about you but i had the infortunate task.of looking over a 360 deal that was offered by Warner/Asylum to the.production company i formerly help put together

IT WAS LIKE A BAD CELL PHONE CONTRACT.....

The CONS heavily outweighed the cons

to be honest THIER WERE NO PROS TO THIS SHYT :russ:

The fukking advance they offered was.more like a deposit on thier behalf that they had the right to recoup at any time!!!

So what the he is you talkinf about..THIER IS NO NET REVENUE TO BE MADE BY THE ARTIST

even the show dough which was the ONE RELIABLE STREAM OF REVENUE is now subject to be be.exploited by thhe majors

its a 360 degree SEXUAL OFFENSIVE CRIME if u ask me

cause the artist is getting FUKKED BY ALL.MEANS POSSIBLE!!

And why is RACE YOU ASK??

Because 360 as conciebed by Lyor Cohen and Craig.Kallman were first tried in the URBAN FIELD OF.MUSIC by labels like Atlantic and Warner

and.mostllly were offered as.the ONLY OPTION tjat.an artist was.offered

they didnt do that eith Country or Rock.acts..they still had the opportunity to excercise leverage and.explore.or negotiate other contract.options

look at Lupe...Lyor had no respect.for.duke....tried to treat this dude like rookie artist by trying ti get him restructure hus deal into a 360

also isnt it ironic...that 360 came at a time when Urban music is now a marketable pop product? :manny:

You are not a realist my friend, you leave in a dream world.
In my dream world, there would only be indie labels and everyone would have nice contracts.
I'm very for competition, I can't understand how they let Universal buy EMI and all that.

But the reality is that the internet came, labels had to find new ways to fund their operations. The reason to why I say it isn't bad is cause you get a lot of money and your personal risk is very limited. If you fail, you still get money, if you win, you get a little less (see Jay-z). You can take that, or you cam take a deal in which they give you a small loan, limited guidance, if you fail, you owe them now if you win, you win big.

And it's definitely not limited to urban music :what: do you think boy bands and shyt were sitting on CMB contracts :dead:,
360 deals has been around since forever, it's popularity has been mixed though. Motown was like the first label to give out these so called slave contracts, shocker.
The difference between now and then is that people hade more options back then, today a few acts own the whole industry..

1. Dame yapping about net and gross when NOBODY wanted to sign Jay. They had NO leverage to demand gross in their contract. That Priority deal was them getting what they could, which means the scraps. PLUS, Dame didn't know anything about the deal until I introduced the Roc to John Meneilly as a business manager. He explained their contract and thats when Dame went ape, like he was owed gross.

2. The Ski contracts were boilerplate music agreements . Dame never said he didn't want their publishing until we were negotiating the contracts. All of a sudden an 18 year old kid (Dame was 18) is so knowledgeable in contracts from the gate? Nikka so delusional. Anyways, once he really got cool with Ski, he gave the publishing back. As an attorney, I'm looking out for my client and the end game is to ALWAYS get some publishing. Every since white Jesus created the music industry, publishing was the holy grail. All of a sudden, because I'm Black, I'm supposed to tell my client "hey, let's not try to get some publishing?" Yeah okay.

3. The lawyer on deck in the video? I got him hired by Dame 5 years ago. I planted him into the Dame Dash circus world because he was a young cat looking for a job. I spoke to him this week about this video. He tells me he finally stopped fuxin with Dame last week and is about to sue Dame for all types of unpaid salary and physical threats to his person. The same lawyer in this video is telling me he believes Dame has some sort of bi polar mental imbalance. I detest going at my own people but Dame is sheisty. Ask his unpaid employees who work on some Chinese sweat shop status with no salary benefit and free meals.

4. The sad part is Dame is brilliant dude. And his message was so inspiring last month. It sucks to see him killing himself. Again. I guess thats what happens when you choose to smoke weed all day instead on taking your prescribed meds.

This is getting sad. Dame is growing backwards :smh:

He attacked all these vultures and forgot he was one too. Who in his circle is loyal enough to help him?

@CombatJack

Jesus.. Watch Lyor get on your show and talk like a calm intelligent human being and respond logically to all Dame's claims.

What's sad is that Dame has engaged and still engages in shady business practices.

When Lyor remains calm while highlighting Dame's inconsistencies I may shed a metaphorical tear..

I'm always pulling for us but we got to do better

Combat Jack: So, Lyor, Dame's been calling you a culture vulture, b. Why is that?
Lyor Cohen: I don't know why. I love the culture of hip hop.
Combat Jack: *Haha* That's what's up.
Dallas Penn: Ayo, fukk all this culture vulture shyt. I wanna talk about fecal dust!
*Whole room laughs as they move on to the next topic*
