Zion Williamson’s power has always been evident on the basketball court. But on the golf course the 6-foot-7, 285-pounder was a lot more force than finesse, actually snapping his club in a team outing on Friday.
New Orleans had an outing for sponsors and season ticket holders, and some players predictably had better games than others. Frank Jackson reportedly looked pretty good, rookie Jaxson Hayes less so. But as he usually does, the 2018 top overall draft pick stole the show.
In a video tweeted out by the Pelicans, Williamson — clad in a red Nike Pelicans polo shirt and black shorts — is shown teeing up and actually snapping his club with a single powerful lefty Paul Bunyan-esque swing. He looks at the club quizzically, touches the severed end with his right hand, and sheepishly walks back with a bemused smile to get another one.
“Good God, look at that,” Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said, examining the shattered club. “He literally broke the club.”
The video shows Williamson going back to get another club. The fate of the second club is unknown.
