These two long-running, critically aclaimed franchises have been in competition for the past 36 years. It's 2023 and their latest installment is just as popular as it's ever been, with fans of both franchises proclaiming one game over the other as Game of the Year. However, no one else's opinion matters but TheColi. So lets deliberate.

Which is the better game?

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom:
The sequel to Breath of the Wild, TOTK adds building mechanics to the series taken right out of Minecraft and Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, with time-altering shenanigans that push the physics of the aging Nintendo Switch console to its very limit. It sold 10 million in it's first 3 days and is sitting at 96 on metacritic.

Final Fantasy 16:
Final Fantasy ditches its famous turn-based gameplay for Devil May Cry style combat and a story heavily inspired by Game of Thrones with epic battles taken right of Shadow of the Colossus. It sold 3 million in its first 3 days and is sitting at 87 on metacritic.

I'm personally not voting yet because although I've beaten Zelda TOTK, I've only just started FF16.

I thought they were both upper end 8/10s

As much as I like TOTK, to me the best parts of it were from BOTW and the new stuff didn’t capture me as much. BOTW is an undeniable 10/10 to me, but TOTK felt like more of a rehash to me.

Zelda is not an RPG

Granted... FF 16 isn't really a RPG either.

The sky islands and the depths really didn’t add much to the experience. I definitely expected more from the added maps/verticality.

TOTK is way better than BoTW, but BoTW was more memorable and impactful for me.

There’s multiple areas in FF16 i feel are way better than Zelda, the combat, the music, the story, the set pieces, boss battles, etc.

TOTK is the overall better more well rounded product though.

But also, like the OP i doubt most people here have even played both games to completion (outside of me)

Don't really consider Zelda an action RPG. Open world, action-adventure puzzler.

This. I loved Tears but ain’t no way I’m calling a game with 1 melee attack button with a stop and go projectile game an “action” RPG:russ:

If anything it’s more of a puzzle-based action-adventure game. The combat and RPG depth is very very light. The more complex combat options are moreso tied to the puzzler element IMO
