Not that I'm for or against Brzezinksi, but it seems like the government at his time underestimated Iran and Afghanistan. The bigger fish they were going after was obviously Russia and they did what they thought was the right move. Brzezinski response about the Taliban while somewhat arrogant is not totally off basis about them just being a group of rebels. Maybe they knew arming them would lead to what it eventually did, but who knows. The whole region has been only been further damaged by the carving up of the Middle East after WWI. I would only say place yourselves in their position and what would of you of done different?
Not getting together with our partners and creating Israel.
Not funding and calling the enemy of all these nations our best ally- and I would have became the friend of oil producing nations, letting them mind their own business, instead of making them hate us by forcing and manipulating their politics for decades.
Also, I would have refocused after Russia... Refocused on improving domestic issues in America and making children in America more advanced than other nations in technology and science. Instead, we felt like a world power and acted as world police.
Yawn...ZB has always had beef with Russia. This is a personal vendetta agenda...nothing more, nothing less.
If you want to look at ZB and Russia that way, then you also have to look at the whole Middle East as a personal vendetta. The Ottoman empire was the last real threat the West had. After WWI, with the help of other middle east nations, the whole area was carved up to cause destabilization. As far as making friends with Iran, that was not going to happen. You had Britain, Russia, US and others fighting for oil in Iran back then. There is no what we would like history to be, there is only what is.
1. The Ottoman Empire was crumbling when the 1900's came around. England was head superpower at that time. U.S. was getting on it's feet.
2. British was already friends with Iran in the 1900's when the Shah's father control the country.
3. You might want to check your history b.
4. British, French, and Russians created the agreements to divide up the region and control of oil producing regions..... Which violated the agreement Britain previously made with those nations, violating those friendships.
