Songwriting defined as the ability to write hooks, select beats*, and put together a cohesive record
Example: Canibus is a great lyricist, but terrible songwriter.

*selecting beats also entails pairing a beat with the content and vice versa.

Jay and Big was writing whole albums for nikkas besides being prolific themselves. Jay wrote most of Foxy shyt for her first two albums I think. Wrote Bleek whole debut. I think you didn’t stop seeing jay on the writing credits till his second album. Biggie was writing Lil Jim and Junior Mafia shyt. Then all the ghost writing they did too. Emcees like that be the best writers to me cause they got proven success as themselves, and with multiple other people.

Songwriting has nothing to do with selecting beats, that’s a separate skill.

That’s a some off too but would also consider artists like Biggie, K-Rino, Z-Ro, Bizzy Bone, LL Cool J, people that can write songs and stick to themes.
