Someday, We'll All Be Free
Every so often, I'd scroll on Youtube and look at the old videos of the J5 performing and every time, I am amazed by young Mike's vocal ability.
The only other child that amazed me like that was a 12 year old Jazmine Sullivan. But Mike was on some other shyt.
Smokey Robinson the Gawd told the story how he wrote the song Who's Lovin You for himself. He heard Mike sing it and was like "nevermind" I ain't got shyt on this kid.
When they got to Motown, Berry Gordy had them do a cover of My Girl and this nikka Mike shytted all over the track.
They had this nikka singing all types of "adult content" but Mike could literally pull all of it off because he was so dynamic vocally. He had this "soul". And what makes it even more strange is that he didn't grow up singing in the church. Typically, black artist from that era honed their vocal skills in church. But not him. He just studied the greats on radio and tv. That's how you know it was all natural.
I would even say he was probably a better vocalist as a kid. Adult MJ could get down don't get me wrong, but that explosive soulful voice matured into a softer more smoother tenor as he aged into his late teens/early adult.
Off the Wall/Thriller era I think is the greatest of him vocally as an adult. But child Mike was a fukking monster. You could literally put him against any adult vocalist from that era and he'd hold his own.
