Manual walking seems to scare a lot of people these days. I've watched people wait in line to get onto a crowded, slow moving escalator when there's a wide open set of stairs next to it with nobody in their path. Then you get the death stairs from the lazy fat people as you pass them skipping multiple steps to finish your ascent/descent 10 minutes before they do.
