This was a straight movie. I had a good feeling seeing Barry Jenkins was heading this up. Ryan did a good job at Clarissa. I liked her acting on "Star". The only drawback is she didn't act "hood" like Clarissa. Black sure. But hood, naw. But she was able to bring depth to her character and you see why she is the way she is in real life. Paperboi bodies just about eveything he does and it's no exception here. You see him in real with his non-harlem mannerism. But when he gets into his role, you buy it. I like him and Clarissa's interaction, arguments, etc. Other supporting actors were fine (Clarissa's father, mother, Paperboi's wife,)
Music in this was trash. They had a Royce song, Mos Def/Yasim but the rest was some white people stuff. They did Flint wrong in that aspect. How would you not try to match the mood of the city? I'm no expert on Flint (only been there once) but they definitely didn't try paint it in a bad light. Poverty yes but it wasn't no killing, robbing, thug portrayals.
But overall this is better then a Tubi orNetflix movie. Not Oscar worthy but a good matinee.
