Vin Diesel will soon be reprising his role as extreme athlete-turned-superspy Xander Cage, and with filming underway in Toronto, Paramount Pictures has announced that it will distribute xXx 3: Return of Xander Cage.
Revolution Studios, Roth Kirschenbaum Films, and Diesel’s One Race Films are producing the third installment, which finds Xander coming out of a self-imposed exile to face off against a deadly alpha warrior named Xiang, according to a press release. Racing against Xiang and his team to recover a seemingly unstoppable weapon known as Pandora’s Box, Xander recruits an all-new group of extreme cohorts and finds himself enmeshed in a vast conspiracy that suggests corruption in the world’s most powerful governments.
Certain character details still remain to be seen, but last month, Jet Li joined the cast as the leader of a rival gang, who is presumably Xiang. Nina Dobrev, Ruby Rose, and Deepika Padukone have also signed on, with Samuel L. Jackson set to reprise his role from the original. I Am Number Four’s D.J. Caruso is directing from a script by Chad St. John (London Has Fallen), with revisions by F. Scott Frazier (Collide).
Diesel starred in the 2002 original, which went on to gross $277.4 million worldwide, but he didn’t appear in the sequel, xXx: State of the Union, which starred Ice Cube.
Production is already underway on xXx 3 in Toronto, with additional filming to come in the Dominican Republic.
